Does anyone know if there are special nest boxes required for goldfinches? If not, will a normal nest box with the smaller entrance hole suffice? Any advice greatly appreciated.
Hi Dave!
I may be completely wrong (someone here will soon put me right if so!!) but I don't think finches would nest in boxes as they have 'open' type nests in the wild.... (By open I mean traditional round nest in a tree as opposed to in a hole...)

Hi Dave,
as MarJus has stated. Goldfinches make small open cup nests in tress and shrubs.
Goldfinches will nest in any tall shrubbery that is sufficiently dense. Be careful of summer pruning as you may disturb these birds or even dislodge a nest.
I have never come across any using the hundreds of nest boxes that I annually check, an open front nest box maybe an option if it is well placed in a dense shrub.

Hi Dave, I agree with Marjus. Goldfinch make nests on tree branches. I have seen a nest in a laurel hedge once.
Many thanx for such quick & comprehensive replies. That's magic!!
i have a pair of goldfinches in my indoor aviary and noticed yesterday the male coming out of a nesting box that has nesting material in. its a half open type of box but its not really their season to breed now i dont think? he was also playing with dried medow grass which i scatter at the bottom of the aviary. seemed weird seeing a goldfinch come out of a nesting box but doubt if there will be eggs.
