Nest Box.

Hi all,

As Autumn comes and people prepare to place nestboxes ready for the spring, I have 3 Q's For you:

  • What nestboxes do you have?
  • What has used them in the past?
  • Have you had any autumn visitors yet? ( I know its early, but maybe! :-D )

Birding , Birding, Birding !

  • I sadly have had nothing yet, but it is early!

  • Hello Coal

I have one nest box on the side of the house for bluettits with a camera.(the box not the bluetits LOL). They successfully raised 7 chicks this year, all the brood survived and used the feeders in the garrden for weeks. They have used it for the 3 years it has been up.

One sparrow terrace on the front of the house as we did not have any sparrows and I wanted to attract them. Used successfully by Great tits. They nest in one compartment and use the others as en-suite toilets.

Another single nest box  on a tree, used by bluetits.

I have just bought a tree creeper nest box to erect this autumn. They do visit the garden so it would be amazing if they bred here.

No autumn visitors that I know of but the chaffinch population is increasing steadily again.

    Kind regards Jane.

    Hi Coal

    Great to see you here!

    I have two nestboxes.

One has been made for me and it has had 4 lots of blue tits and a successful 4 broods - the birds love the box

The other nestbox has to get a resident - bought from the RSPB

    No autumn visitors yet!

    Regards

    Kathy and Dave

  • I have three blue tit nest boxes around the garden. One pair were inspecting one near the house on Monday. Fingers crossed as it has never been used yet.

  • Hi all, now is certainly the time to be thinking about nestboxes. We would recommend a good mix of different types. Most garden birds will be fiercely territorial so you are unlikely to get more than one pair of any particular species nesting in a garden. There are some tips on nestboxes on our website http://www.rspb.org.uk/advice/helpingbirds/nestboxes/

  • Hi Coal I have a Sparrow Terrace that was used by a family of Coal Tits and another single box that is investigated each year by Blue tits but never used its been there for about 4 years and this year we have planted a Honey Suckle  to give it a bit of cover. Never seen anything go in the boxes in the Autumn but I keep watching.

I used to be indecisive................... But now I am not so sure.

  • Hi all and thanks for the feedback,
