A camera in the nest box showed a brood of 2 to 3 day old chicks.....the 5th day all the chicks had gone. The box is mounted on a pergola easily accessed via a fence. Could this be rats ?......if so would moving the box to the top of an isolated metal pole inside a full length plastic drain pipe ( to prevent climbing the pole ) prevent future disasters. Or any other suggestions ? This is the first time in a number of years this has happened .
Hi SUMDAW
Sorry to hear that your chicks have been predated - it could well have been a rat. They are excellent climbers, very intelligent and can squeeze through tiny holes. Your pole/plastic pipe set up sounds worth trying out for next time.
Good luck with future broods.
