If you ever wondered what birds get up to at night, I can tell you Bluey makes a devil of a mess but keeps himself spotless. This little video is him last night just before midnight.

Thanks Sparrow. I hope he is just grooming and not getting bitten alive by mites etc. because he is not clearing his mess out of his home.
Great video Sparrow - all he needs now is some Old Spice or Brut and he's good to go!

Oh Brenda, I never thought of that. He looks perfectly healthy when he isn't fluffed up, with no obvious bald patches, but he is losing a lot of little feathers when he grooms. He arrived this evening and went straight to sleep and hasn't moved yet. He usually wakes after about 4 hours and has a good groom then goes back to sleep. Do you think I should clean it out for him? I would hate him to catch mites.
LOL Kezmo - his mate might wonder where he'd been if he met her in the morning smelling nicely!
Sorry Sparrow, I didn't mean to worry you. I was thinking how the female tries to always keep the nest clean by removing poo etc. I am surprised that your bird is happy to live in all his muck but I think some one else mentioned one of their birds did the same as yours. I have never owned a camera in a box. We just clean our boxes when the season is over, so I am learning through your camera that a bird would continue to still roost in a box on it's own, even though it is now spring. I am not sure about cleaning the box now, as you may frighten him off, but if it was me I think I would take that chance, as you are not disturbing a nest and he is not around by day. He may find a partner yet.
Hi Brenda,
I have been dithering about cleaning the box ever since his mate stopped cleaning out the poo. Her last visit was about 5 weeks ago. They have a nest elsewhere, somewhere close by. I have seen her taking nesting material, and only this morning she was ripping my wall basket up!! I am certain it is the same pair because I am thin on the ground as far as blue tits are concerned - I only have 1 or 2 at any one time and have never seen 3 anywhere near here. It was Dangerous who says her box was as disgusting as mine, but now she has sparrows cleaning it out and fighting with the bluetit rooster. Mine is too low for sparrows. One reason for dithering about cleaning it is I would have to get hubby to climb the ladder and dismantle the camera, unscrew the box from the wall, and then put it all back up again. My only alternative is to climb the ladder myself (this is fine) and try to clean it in situ. I'm not sure if I could manage.
Very sweet to be able to see him. I don't know much about blue tits nesting so can't add to advice re cleaning. Do not go up the ladder and risk hurting yourslef though. He must like it messy or he would not leave it like that.

I've learned that I still have a lot to learn...

Just leave it Sparrow. When their chicks hatch, you may find he will spend the night nearer their nest and if another pair are looking for a home, they will clean it out. I am surprised with all your sparrows that you don't have our ' problem', that they have taken over two of our Tit boxes, and as you know, we don't see many sparrow in our garden. Between us though, they are lovely problems to have. I must get a camera before next season though.
I am also surprised about my sparrows. Altogether I have 4 boxes - the rooster is in the middle compartment of a terrace of 3, and another box higher up near the eaves. I understand the sparrows may not like to nest next to a bluetit rooster, but they have shown no interest in the other one either as far as I know. I have seen starlings having a look, but the hole isn't big enough!
You must get a camera. It is wonderful watching. I am sad I may not have a nest, but so glad I have been able to spy on the rooster every night and watch his antics. I have learnt such a lot about his private life. Not only that, but the microphone picks up all the bird song from the neighbourhood and it fills the house.
Hi Saprrow
Great little film of your 'resident' Blue Tit
I see what you mean about his domestic habits
At least he does keep his feathers in tip top condition.
