The Jackdaws have just started their yearly attempt to build a nest in the Dovecote, all their building material falls to the ground and they give up in the end. Other years I have just ignored it, but now I am wondering if I could put up a nesting box for them. Can anybody advise me on the size or structure of the box needed, or indeed if they would use a box.
'Here it is' Ready for new occupants.
It was our friend Paul who helps out in the workshop at busy times who made the box. He just so happened to call in for a cup of tea this morning. (bet he wishes he hadn't now) I have been instucted by him to tell you that the box is made of high grade 22mm marine ply, stainless steel screws, water based non toxic wood preserve and has a removable base for easy cleaning. So now I have told you.
The two Jackdaws have been looking down at it from the roof, so keep your fingers crossed otherwise I am going to look a real wally.
Thank you all for your interest, advise and comments. I will of course keep you posted.
Oh Judi, that is so funny - and what fabulous birds they are, and don't they just love peanuts. (Mine never eat on the ground, they use the bird table and trays)
CG - that is some 5 star nest box and please send Paul to my house.
Cheers, Linda.

Hi Cottagegardener,
I take my hat off to you and Paul - excellent work, If the Jackdaws reject it (doubtful) could you possibly just add a bathroom and we'll rent it for the first week of June!
Regards
Kerry
