The Jackdaws have just started their yearly attempt to build a nest in the Dovecote, all their building material falls to the ground and they give up in the end. Other years I have just ignored it, but now I am wondering if I could put up a nesting box for them. Can anybody advise me on the size or structure of the box needed, or indeed if they would use a box.
Hi thereYes they will nest in boxes and this link from BTO gives some useful advice

Good luck

Thank you very much for that information JudiM. I'm off to get a box made right away.
Alternatively you can find information and plans for building a nestbox for jackdaws here - http://www.rspb.org.uk/advice/helpingbirds/nestboxes/owlskestrels/other.aspx
They will happily use a nestbox and i'm sure they'd appreciate your help!

I have printed the plan from the RSPB website rushed it over to the workshop where there is a lot of spare marine ply, and the box is being made as I type.
Should I hang the box near to the Dovecote? and do you think they will use it this year?
I'll have to go and buy another camera now !
Good luck with it Cottagegardener. I have 3 pairs of jackdaws who visit me all day and I love them. Here's two of them on my feeding pole.
Cheers, Linda.

Hi there - i'm very impressed with your speediness! yep i would say put the nest box up near to the dovecote - they're obviously trying tio in that area anyway so hopefully they'll take to it easily and with a little more success.....
Let us know how it works out!
Oops I should have thought of the RSPB site first, its just you get a really really useful free pack on building siting etc from BTO
Tut tut JudiM.....we'll let you off this time.....;-)
I'm just a learner JudiM, so any information is welcome. I found the BTO site very informative and I have also sent for the info pack so thank you.
