Blue Tits - West facing nest box

Hi, I'm in a panic!  I have blue tits with young nesting in a West facing box.  The sun is obviously hitting the box full on at the moment.  Any tips on what I can do to ensure the chicks make it?  It must be like a sweat box in there!

Aany advice / help will be much appreciated.

  • Tricky one this. Is it possible to fix a shade above the box, without disturbing the box? Perhaps when this years season is over, you may be able to fix a piece of ply over the roof, so it extends over the front and sides, giving shade.

As a builder, I have seen Starling nests beneath roof tiles, and on top of the underfelt. It is REALLY hot there, and the young have survived, so the Blueys should be o k.

    Take care all, Stich.

  • Don't think we can put anything above at the mo. In any event one of the chicks showed its face for a while last night so they're thriving. Mum and dad are trying to coax them out so with a bit of luck and, dare I say, cloud! all will be OK.  The box site will be rearranged for next year tho.  More foliage around etc. thanks for your comments :)
