Thks doggie I will check it out.the box is pretty high up on the wall so will see what we can do to make it less accessible.
Hi Sue, the only similar experience I have had was when a nest of young birds fledged in the early hours of the morning, and a predator got to them in those first few minutes. The parent birds hung around for quite a while. There was virtually nothing left of the young - just a few feathers in the garden bed. It is heartbreaking and I can understand how you feel.

Thks tulip, she only hatched them this week so they were really helpless. Earlier today both parents were hanging about by the box but they have both gone now. Just cannot think what could have got into them as the hole is quite small. Hopefully the parents or another pair will try again.
