Here you go -

Dunno what you think.  Never done the rhyming type poetry and haven't written anything since school so a bit rusty -

Sparrow hawk

An evil eye,

A dip of wing,

Talons grasping,

Death,

And life.

The Skein

A dull winter’s day drawing to a close,

A distant noise, drawing close,

Through the darkening, dreary evening sky,

Geese arriving on the suns last thoughts

Overnight safety sought,

A place of refuge, safety and rest.

The calls billowing through the gloom,

An estuary suddenly filled with life,

Shutting down till morning light.

Cheers

Work is for those people that don't Bird-watch!!!!

  • Well its taken me a few weeks to do those - well wrote the first pretty quickly and made a start on the second but then forgot about them until tonight!  So I'm not exactly prolific but will try and keep the inspiration going.

    Cheers

  • That's very good Stoat, I particularly like "The Skein", it's highly evocative.

A thing of beauty is a joy forever.

    Hi Stoat

Love your poems and will think of one or two myself

I feel if you are good with words if that they should never be wasted, and one thing is to show how words can be used.

    Regards

  • Hello All,

Great Poem Stoat and like most on here I've never actually written a poem before.....

With this in mind and Grandpaddys comments hope you don't mind but I thought I'd also have a go....

"Our spirits are lifted now that spring is here

Hazey clouds in the morning turn to clear

Bird song fills the air which adds to our cheer

But frost still threatens the seedlings I fear

    .........................................................................

Up in the trees Sparrows squable and fight

Whilst young Robins take their very first flight

An old Barn Owl hoots in the night

While during the day down swoops a Red Kite

    .........................................................................

The first bulbs break through from the bare soil

Whilst old Jack Frost threatens to spoil

A gardener works hard with blood, sweat and toil

His dog at his feet faithful and loyal

    ........................................................................

Daffodils, snowdrops and an English Bluebell

Give colour and aromas for us to smell

Out on the lake a boat raises it's sail

While in the field a lamb waggles it's tail

    ..........................................................................

So stop for a while and sit on that old style

Enjoy springs gifts with a big happy smile"

My apologies in advance!.....I blame it on these damn pain killers I'm on!!!.....LOL

  • Hi Higgy that's Brilliant I think Stoat has inspired us all into some brain-work!!   Well done!!!

    Hi higgy

Lovely bit of peotry and it tells us here how much you love your birds.

Know what you mean about painkillers - I have had my own aches and pains this week too - part of getting older I guess.

Need lots of fresh air and birding once more - best thing to lift the spirits anytime....along with the written word here.

    Regards

    Kathy and Dave

  • Another string to your bow, Higgy! Don't either you or Stoat apologise for being on medication though, many of the Romantics helped themselves to opiates, think of Coleridge when he wrote Kubla Khan!

A thing of beauty is a joy forever.

  • It's Co-codamine and diazepam.....have to say my head is 'swimming' a bit!.....I think the fact that I was still up and away with fairies at 2am might of also helped!

I have to say it was actually quite therapeutic and did make me forget about my back for a while.....maybe I'll have another go at some 'sleepless' hour later!!

Come on then the rest of you let's have your poems now??.....
