Persian Poetry

Having noticed  Eilid's 'quote' by Rumi I am reminded of  this beautiful poem by Rumi - one of my favourites

Oh, if a tree could wander
and move with foot and wings!
It would not suffer the axe blows
and not the pain of saws!
For would the sun not wander
     away in every night ?
How could at every morning
     the world be lighted up?
And if the ocean's water
would not rise to the sky,
How would the plants be quickened
     by streams and gentle rain?
The drop that left its homeland,
the sea, and then returned ?
It found an oyster waiting
     and grew into a pearl.
Did Yusaf not leave his father,
in grief and tears and despair?
Did he not, by such a journey,
     gain kingdom and fortune wide?
Did not the Prophet travel
     to far Medina, friend?
And there he found a new kingdom
     and ruled a hundred lands.
You lack a foot to travel?
     Then journey into yourself!
And like a mine of rubies
     receive the sunbeams? print!
Out of yourself such a journey
will lead you to your self,
It leads to transformation
     of dust into pure gold!

  • Lovely pipit :0) a really nice poem.

An optimist sees the beauty of the complete rose.A pessimist sees only the thorn .

It is, isn't it. I love the way the translation from Farsi into English is a bit flawed and woolly. Adds to the charm I think. You should read some Persian poetry, it's so spiritual and very romantic.

  • That's beautiful, Pipit.  Thanks.  (will look some Persian poetry up, for more!)

Here's another poem by Rumi that helped me through a bad time recently.

    Petals

Even when you tear its petals off one after another,
the rose keeps laughing and doesn't bend in pain.
"Why should I be afflicted because of a thorn?
It is the thorn which taught me how to laugh."
    Whatever you lost through fate,
be certain that it saved you from pain.
A Sheikh was asked: "What is Sufism?"
He said: "To feel joy in the heart when sorrow appears."

  • Hi Pipit

Not someone I know , and enjoyed both poems.

Reminds me of a verse from the poem Joy  not sure by who now, it went something like:-

    Joy gives you wings
    In difficult circumstances;
    The problems don't go away,
but you can rise above them.

Yes Robert, that is a lovely poem. It's by Jake Erkens

    The whole poem goes:

    Joy gives you wings
    In difficult circumstances;
    The problems don't go away,
but you can rise above them

Joy is not just a feeling or emotion
Joy is the pleasure of life
Life in itself cannot be life without Joy
Life is hard, but Joy can overcome it

Joy is only there if you accept it
Joy can be found at any time of the day
Say Joy were an angel, it would save you
Say Joy were a demon, it would haunt you

However, Joy can be anything you like or love
Mainly Joy comes to help you through life

    Times of trials comes
    Times of sadness comes
    Joy is in the heart
    Joy is bigger then sadness

Joy gives you wings to live another day
Joy is the reason why people smile back at you
Joy is Joy when you accept it

  • Hi Pipit

Thanks for that, it's been awhile....

    Robert

  • Pipit, such emotional, deep  and thoughtful poetry by Rumi. Thank you so much for introducing me to them.

Thanks for reminding me of Joy by Jake Erkens. I haven't heard it for a while.

  • Thank you for the  'Joy' poem - its wonderful.  I have often remarked in my life that there is not enough Joy about!
