I have just seen 4 Male ducks and a female near my flat on a grass area, one Male is on top of the fence and the rest are on the ground, two males in front and one Male with the female at the back.
They won't move from the spot but I've never seen them here before, its about 1.5/2 miles to the nearest pond and I'm worried about them because there are a lot of foxes seen around here they live in a garden next door and I'm worried they're going to get eaten!
I haven't gone near them because I'm worried they'll attack me as they wont move so what should I do, are they safe just standing there?
Hello EmLouise, If there are no ducklings involved and you have only seen adult Mallards then there is no problem at all as they are, like most birds, very alert animals and will spook into flight instantly if a fox or other predator were on the scene. They may already be used to humans so won't necessarily flee from people. They often eat grass as part of their diet so may just be foraging on the grassed area and the males will be keeping close to any female as it is mid breeding season for them. Ducks are often happy with as little water as a puddle so don't worry about them, they will be absolutely fine and will soon take off if a fox came. Often at night-time they go off to their usual roosting place; we have mallards that spend all day in our garden but then fly off (even when it has already gone dark) to a safer roosting site as we have foxes that visit each nighttime.
