Has anyone else seen blackbirds with body growths? I have now seen 2 male blackbirds in the space of as many months with what look like growths one on the body and the other on the head and chest. The skin goes very pale and featherless over the growths, apart from this the birds seem quite well, eating and drinking normally. Has anyone got any ideas on what this is? gill
I've seen a couple of Great Tits with facial growths recently - it's thought to be a form of avian pox. It has been reported in other species too, though I've not heard of cases in Blackbirds before. Here's a BTO link with more info: www.bto.org/.../avian-pox
