Golden Eagle found shot in Dumfriesshire

The Scottish SPCA have realised this story after a Golden Eagle was shot. Thankfully this bird was found alive, so fingers crossed he makes it.

RSPB Scotland will be realising a statement shortly, which I'll post here too.

  • It's probably excessive to wish to boil someone in oil, but for people who would do this it's highly appropriate.

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

  • This stuff makes me angry. This is 2012 not Victorian Britain. It seem some attitudes will never change.

  • Clare I agree with you! These stupid paltry sentences they get (if ever even caught) are hardly a deterrent!

Me too Sunrider. It's a sad, sad world we live in! Having just spent 2 weeks in Scotland, I was constantly on the look out for BoP there! It's a thrill to see them and one of the reasons why I love Scotland so much. Just a shame that some of the 'custodians' of the beautiful land don't feel the same....

I briefly saw a Hen Harrier and was told I was very lucky it to see it as they're always shot up there too..... Horrifying!

  • All I can say is shame on Scotland, this is becoming a regular occurance

Of all creatures, man is the most detestable, he is the only creature that inflicts pain for sport, knowing it to be pain.
    ~ Mark Twain

  • It's not just Scotland.  A while back there was a campaign to have white-tailed eagles released locally (the Suffolk coast) - I got quite excited at the thought of this!  Sadly it never happened - there was so much opposition (even the MP), and the main objections seemed to be the farming and shooting community who didn't want such a bird getting to 'their' pheasants and suchlike.  It's all too obvious what would have happened to many of the eagles had the scheme gone ahead.  Why has it always got to be a question of convenience to us?

  • It seems to me that we live in a world where more and more people know the price of everything & the value of nothing....Shame on us all.

No way this is just a Scottish problem, think of the Hen Harriers,Peregrines and other raptors that see to go missing in Bowland, and in parts of our Eastern edge of the Yorkshire Dales we have a great problem with crime against birds of prey to the extent that we were close to the top of the "league table".Heaven knows what the answer is but there needs to be a solution  before we lose some birds all together .
