Hi Everyone
I'm new to the community and was wondering if anyone could help me? For the past couple of years I've seen lapwings nesting on land that is currently under development near where I live. Is there any legal protection for such nesting sites or will these birds have to "move on" when they find an industrial complex has been built on their nesting site?
Any advice would be much appreciated!

Welcome to the forum from Scotland. I looked this up for you as it was of interest as the details I recall where I used to live Lapwings were protect as well as the ground they were nesting on. Hopefully of some use to your enquiry I'm sure there's someone on the forum who may have a more suitable answer or could assist further. Keep us posted on the issue.

Hi sarah and welcome. I have the same problem. Builders are just waiting for the young to leave and then building starts.

I would have thought this too as I've known the site agents to be aware of such & placed a temporary halt to construction until the birds have fledged. Might be worth having a word on site?
It should not be a long wait for the developers as most of the Lapwings in our area have either fledged or close to fledging.I think Lapwings only have one brood a year they will be able to move away when work starts.They will no doubt find an alternative nesting area next season,nature does tend to get round these problems if given time.

If the work is imminent then please alert the contractors to the location of the active nests so that they can avoid them. If this is a development in the planning stage, have a look at our take action for wildlife pages on how to oppose it if you feel that it threatens a valued wildlife site.
