Can somebody give me some advice urgently please? My neighbour has a swallow nest in his eaves with young in it at the moment. He is now replacing woodwork round his house with upvc cladding. I have told him he cant remove the nest whilst young still in it but he insists it is going to be knocked down to allow work to continue. I have tried the "against the law" "wood can stay until young out of nest" etc etc to no avail. Workmen are there at the moment and I have said I will report them if they knock down the nest but its too late then for the young. ADVICE ON MY NEXT MOVE PLEASE>
Ring the police and RSPCA

Birding is for everyone no matter how good or bad we are at it,enjoy it while you can
Yes, ring the local police Wildlife Crime Officer and say it is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
Please let us know how you get on.
Cheers, Linda.

Thought about police but they can't/wont do anything until after the fact not as a preventative. Until deed is done no crime has been committed!! As I live in a small village, "local" wildlife officer is based two hours away in Dundee! Taking photos etc, I will do right now. Problem is the guy who owns the house also owns the building firm that are doing the work so no hope on that score. Worst of it is this is his holiday home which he uses Sat/Sun every other week. I really don't want to wait until nest is destroyed.
I would still try the police. It's their job to prevent crime, not to wait until one has been committed.
No, I tried them Linda, can't do anything.
Well that is a poor do. I would contact the police wildlife officer direct by telephone and tell him. He may be able to sort things out even if he is a long way away. You can't give up.
As well as following all the advice given by doggie and Sparrow, perhaps you could try a personal approach to the workmen. Tell them it is illegal to destroy the nest. You may find they have some understanding of the problem despite the views of the property owner.

Do what doggie says
the majority of tepuatable builders know the law and penalties. Most police forces wont get involved until a crime has been commited or is in the act
Have tried, DOESN'T WORK AT WEEKENDS!!!!! What a nonsense. I can't seem to get anywhere. Police def will not do anything until crime is committed. Workmen know its illegal to destroy nest but when they said this to their boss/owner of house he told them nest was coming down! He prob end up doing it himself. Starting to feel really useless at the moment. Have taken dated photos of nest etc. but thats not going to stop him doing anything, I even made sure they saw me taking photos!
Not much else you can do then
could you post some pics here of the nest to be destroyed please?
