I have what I believe is a magpie nest in the electrical meter box on the side of my house. The bird seems to have poked thru a small hole in the plastic box cover. I will repair after the breeding season but I wonder whether the young birds will be able to leave the nest. The nest rests at the bottom of the box, about 12 inches below the hole in the box.
Is it possible it is another species, and the magpie visited to raid the eggs/chicks?
I don’t think so; the bird was sitting on its eggs and resting comfortably and made a low hiss sound when I opened the door.
I’m not sure it’s a magpie - it seems a bit small and now that I look at the head it might be a Great Tit.
and now that I look at the picture, I see a little bird in front.
Yes, it is a different species. As you subsequently said, it is a great tit. Young should be able to get out, but the nest needs to be left undisturbed.
Thank you. I’ll leave alone. I only opened to get a meter reading!
