I was sitting here on this dull, cold afternoon with rain and sleet falling feeling rather depressed. Time for a cup of tea I thought. Then, from the kitchen window I saw two nice unexpected visitors within 15 minutes.
First a pair of lesser redpolls on the nyger seed feeder. The goldfinches weren' best pleased to have intruders eating their personal supplies
.
Then, a visit from a green woodpecker whom I've not seen since before Christmas giving my now unfrozen lawn a good working over.
My mood lightened and I enjoyed my cup of tea even more.
So what has cheered you up today. Go on, hit us with your rhythym sticks.

Hi TJ
Great pictures of the Redpolls and a joy to see
Yes it is strange that some of us have changed our Avaitor, are now giving out our personal details openly on the RSPB site?
I would not personally
Regards
Kathy and Dave
Amazing photos, and how cool to have FOUR redpolls, let alone the woodpecker too!
A closed mouth gathers no foot.

My two redpolls returned again today but this time invited some friends to join them.
The highlight of the day was 6 Marsh Harriers all in the air together, and ironically one of the first birds of the day as we walked from the car park was a redpoll with a flock of goldfinches.
You're really lucky to get redpoll visit your feeders, have seen them a few times on the local patch, but never actually in the garden........................yet.

That top shot is an absolute beauty, nice one.
What cheered me up? My local garden centre had loads of plants reduced by 50 and 75%. Probably something to do with the snow.
An egret changed my life!
Unknown said: For me it had to be on the bus on my way to work. Going past the immaculate gardens near town I watched a crow sat happily in the neat beds pulling out all of the pansy plug plants & chucking them aside to have a little dig with his beak. I did actually laugh out loud & the woman behind me said "ooooh the little B***er !!!" That cheered me up, a crow with a behavioural disorder, now that would be interesting to unpick instead of my usual suspects at work. :-)

Hi,
Fantastic photos !!! never noticed those in my garden before, will be keeping an eye out ! We have had 2 pairs of Yellowhammers, yet to get a photo, they to far away for the camara :(. Had a great spotted woodpecker also back. Comes every year to the peanut feeder sometime brings his wife. A few years back they brought a young with them . So exectited watched for ages while they taught it to feed from the feeders. Sadly not seen it again just the mum and dad come. Is it true they only have 1 young at a time ? Looking forward to getting some photos this year. I normally just watch them, i can for hours...
Neil
If it aint broken, dont fix it !.... all good things come to those who wait !
More cheerfulness for me:- Grey Wagtail still around, one pied wagtail has become two, two greenfinches arrived on Saturday, and the female blackcap is still around. Not seen the male blackcap yet - what a shame, can't do any housework as I need to keep watching to find out if there is one!!!
The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!
My little wren is back, been trying to get photo of him but his so fast and small.
Also getting my hubby to put up more feeders on my apple tree, got over 33 on there now LOL
Hey farmer, farmer, put away the D.D.T now. Give me spots on my apples, but leave me the birds and the bees, please!

I do understand. Mondays are my days for housework and cleaning up the debris from the weekend, but not today! My little pied wagtail came back after more than 2 weeks away, and I watched my regular pair of collared doves mating in next door's apple tree, so have been watching them like a sparrowhawk to see if I can find out where their nest is.
Lovely to see yellowhammers Neil.
Cheers, Linda.
