Why oh WHY does it always happen...

...when I don't have my camera with me!

Yesterday took a trip up to the shops and came back via the burn path and what do I see, a buzzard, and he sat nicely about 6 metres away from me!  Couldn't believe it, he even opened his wings a couple of times posing nicely before flying off to a different tree!  They always do that to me!

I think I'll get myself a little pocket camera that I can keep with me all the time!

  • Oh dear Kat, what a shame about the camera, but what a brill thing to see on your shopping trip, and so close. I agree you should get a pocket digital. Was he eyeing up your shopping in case you had some tasty morsels in the bags?

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Hi Kat, it happens to us all.

I have missed so many good shots.

Have you thought about a camera pouch that fits around the waist.

It might be a cheaper alternative to a new pocket camera.

  • Hi Kat, the same has happened to me so many times that recently both OH and I invested in compact cameras. We both got the Samsung WB550 and while it wasn't the cheapest available they have been worth it as we have certainly put them through their paces.

The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.

The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!

  • Oh dear... I do sympathise! So frustrating! I 'generally' always have my camera with me as it's in my handbag, however, even then it can be too late as by the time I get it out...! I often drive with it on the passenger seat, in case I'm able to pull-over safely and quickly to get a shot of whatever! (That's how I managed to get my 'leaping deer' in the wildlife gallery)

    hi Kat

Totally sympathise with you with bad timing!

I make a point of taking my camera out each time I go out now

I always take my backpack out so the camera goes into the backpack

We got a cover for the camera to protect it from any knocks too.

The camera bag is a great around the shoulder area, as it looks like a normal bag (and not a camera bag)

    Better all round.

    Great idea Buzzard {thumbs up}

  • My camera is an SLR so not really the type of camera to be walking around town with nor could I have it in a wait pouch either, plus if it was in my backpack I doubt the buzzard would have hung around as I would have had to move to much to get it out.  I think it may be time for a little pocket camera, my OH is wanting one afterall and I could buy him one to keep in my pocket...hehehe

I did have the stuff from the butchers in the bag, maybe that's why the buzzard hung around!

This is the brand we have, and a similar picture of the camera bag .... stated in the link

This camera can be looped by a belt to your waist too.

There are a good assortment of camera bags from this company - including ones your can use for clipping around your waist

If it does not suit this link will be useful to others

  • Kathy, you beat me to it.

I was going to post a similar link to lowepro supplies of pouches. I use their products.

There is a number of pouches suitable for d / slr camera's. I was ringing on sunday and one of the group was using a camera pouch, as we need our hands free when extracting birds.

As we go to some very difficult locations eg: cliff faces etc,  quite a few members use camera pouches. Which are totally adequate as most of the group use dslr cameras.

I don't think I'd be comfortable walking around with a my camera around my waist especially as I'm out with the dog and moving about a lot, not to mention carrying shopping home! I by far prefer my rucksack and chose a rucksack over the other types of carry bags.  Plus the waist belts never fit me either :-(

    Hi Kat

I understand what you mean about feeling uncomfortable with any camera equipment

Having a dog close to you will not help.  It can be a distraction for you.

The thing that worries me most of all is walking near an area of town that is too built up, and having a camera or bins can make you a walking target for thieves

I only use my bins and camera when I need them and the area I am in is appropriate for the occasion - even if Dave is not with me for backup purposes.

So it is common sense prevails most of all.

    Regards

    Kathy and Dave
