I was observing a Thrush in my Hawthorn Tree yesterday morning (At first I thought the bird was a Mistle Thrush but no it was a Female Blackbird)
Just looking at her breast area just shows what a beautiful bird that she is.
So speckly and rich brown in colouration and a long way of drab looking
One thing I have always wanted to know is why the male blackbirds always chase the female blackbirds around in circles inthe garden area? Anyone know?

I totally agree that female blackbirds are anything but drab. I love the chocolate brown upper parts. Like someone has poured melted Cadbury's Dairy Milk all over them.
No idea about the chasing in circles though.

Saw 12 blackbirds all round the feeding area to-day. Never seen so many together.
I know why they chase round in circles they need to keep warm and its part of their fitness training!

I think the blackbird numbers in our gardens have increased due to an influx from the rural areas where there are no gardens. There are many blackbirds in the shrubs and trees down by our river who must be suffering terribly at the moment, living where they do with no natural foods available at the moment.
