Hi All
I just glanced out of my office window on this foggy Bedfordshire morning and noticed a grey wagtail patrolling the lawn of the formal gardens here at the Lodge. These smart little birds often winter here and can be seen around the gardens, buildings and ponds. They also venture into gardens across the UK so one to look out for over the next few weeks.
In case anyone is planning on visiting the Lodge this winter, some of the regulars that you should come across include mistle thrush, in full song as well earlier in the week, great spotted woodpeckers, nuthatch, flocks of geenfinch, chaffinch and goldfinch and as well as the occasional sighting of a kestrel. Weasel and stoat have been seen in recent weeks and redwings have joined the blackbirds in plundering the various berries on offer around the site.
If you are very lucky you may stumble across a woodcock on one of the woodland trails or even spy a roosting tawny owl, i haven't yet this winter but its well worth a walk at lunchtime just in case! Speaking of woodcock, has anyone else come across any yet this winter?

All sounds wonderful Ian! Must get to the Lodge one day! Never seen a woodcock but then they're not the easiest bird to spot are they? Would love to see the stoats & weasels! Love to watch their antics! Very foggy here too today and was -2 when I left for work (don't think it's much warmer now either!). Might go for a wander lunch time although I don't reckon on seeing much with the reduced visibility!!

Hi Ian
Lovely report of all of the 'nature' activity at the Lodge
I am sure that Dave and I will visit The lodge before the end of this year - Xmas holidays is a good possibility for us as we stay so close by in the area.
The Mistle Thrushes are in full singing mode at dusk at the moment in Bedford. Love to listen to them
I have heard reports that Blackbirds have started to sing already at this time of the year in some parts of the country.
No, we have never seen a Woodcock yet, but it would be nice if if could see one {big smile}
Regards
Kathy and Dave
