Return to MONCREIFFE HILL 18/11/09

04/11/09 Moncreiffe Hill is one of my local hills, between Bridge of Earn and Perth, the view is of Perth and

the north.

While up there I spent half an hour or so chasing a Gold Crest who just wouldn't stay still. During this time

I snapped this Tree Creeper, It was part of a small flock of mixed birds. mostly Tits.

If the sun is bright later I will return and try again, as after taking 20 or so shots, these are the best!

those ******* little branches and twigs always in the way. Made focusing impossible.

Good enough for ID.

A flock of about eight Bullfinch also in the same area. feeding on berries. Another reason to return.

Although I had a frustrating time trying to get the right shot! It was still brilliant seeing them and smelling the Autumn wood.

John :-)

For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.

  • Looks a wonderful location John with some interesting birds as well! Love the second shot of the goldcrest! The bullfinches are beautiful! Great to get a tree creeper too! They move about so much! As for focusing quick, had the same problem this morning with a coat tit with a berry in it's beak but it's not sharp!! :-(

Look forward to seeing more!! Shine sun, shine!! :-)

  • Lovely photos John. I know what you mean about branches etc. Do you set your camera to "spot" focus or leave it on the usual setting? The other alternative, of course, is to carry a pair of secateurs ☺☺☺

The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.

The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!

  • Hi thanks for the comments! I do tend to leave the camera on 'spot' focus and sports function. On this occasion I also tried manual focus to try and bypass the problem. Just waiting for the sun to shine so I can try again, If they still there that is!!!

    John :-)

  • Hi John,

Love your photos and really do appreciate how much effort to get them so thanks for taking the time!

Lurve the treecreeper I've never seen one before - do they always look like that i.e. like it's a hard slog up the tree?!

The first shot of your Goldcrest looks like he's hanging on that twiggy branch for dear life! lol.

Super shots of the bullfinches they really are handsome birds.

  • Thanks Kezmo, its time and effort, but I love it! I'm obsessed :-)

The Treecreeper look like that in photo's but in reality they scurry around up and down like mice on the tree, very fast and easy.

Didn't get any sun today to speak of, so I'm itching to get back and hoping their still around. Tomorrow maybe!!

    John :-)

  • Hi John.  Love the photos especially the treecreeper, you must have bucket loads of patience!  Great bullfinches too. We get the occasional one in the garden but not as often as I'd like.  Good luck with the weather tomorrow. SB

  • John, just don't know how you got that treecreeper to stay still long enough to photograph it. As ever, lovely pictures. Thank you.

  • Hi Sarum Bat and Brenda H, thanks for the kind words. I managed to get one or two shots in spring, in the same area, of Treecreeper and chicks.

They have great Camouflage but make a right racket!

The rain stayed on today so no luck.

    John :-)

  • Wow John!! That's awesome to see chicks, let alone photograph them!!! Well done!!

  • Great photos Highland Mchale. I have never been to Moncreiffe Hill but I have been to Kinnoull Hill which is not too far away. That was many years ago when I lived in Dundee.
