Any good birdwatching areas in Inverness?

Hi there

I would love some advise here.  It is short notice at the moment, and a bit rushed at the moment {smile}

We are planning to go to Inverness this weekend, and we would like to do some bird watching while we are there.

I understand that we will be staying close to Beauly Road (A862) - about 2 miles out of the town centre

Anyone know of any reserves or similar before we arrive there {thumbs up}

Thank you in advance

Regards

Kathy and Dave

  • Hi Kathy and Dave.

    If you have a car head out the Beauly Road towards Glen Affric (well signposted). If you can make it up to the Glen there are plenty of bird watching opportunities and spectacular scenery. On the way there check out Aigas Field Centre. A walk along the Rver Ness in the centre of Inverness towards the Ness Islands is also good - you can usually see dippers.

    If you are interested you are also not far from the Black Isle where you can see the dolphins at Chanonry Point.

    hi Rosie

    Thank you for your suggestions.

    Hopefully we will have a car (our friends car no doubt)

    I receive regular magazines from the Aigas Field Centre so I have an idea what they are about.

    Not seen Dippers for years - now that would be a bonus!.

    Will take note of what you have said here

    Thank you

  • Chanonry Point is without doubt the best place to see dolphins I know of, If you haven't been before (its a must see) and there is always Nigg Bay  RSPB just up the coast. Standing at the waters edge at Chanonry Point provides a sensation that will stay with any nature lover forever.

    For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.

    Hi John

    Thank you for your suggestions and I will take a print of all what has been said here (smile)

    Must get a chance to see a Dolphin - nothing like it! (thumbs up}

    Chanonry Point seems to be a favourite amongst many people so I will have a good look into the matter.{thumbs up}

    Thank you

    Chanonry Point

  • Hello

    Can't help with bird watching sites but having recently spent a couple of nights in Inverness we can highly recommend it, found it a really delightful, clean city, full of character and some good restaurants too (can recommend both The Kitchen and The Mustard Seed, on opposite sides of the river) there are also good pubs for live music, We didn't spend too much time exploring the city as we were travelling out to Kyle of Localsh by train (a childhood ambition fulfilled), if you are heading out that far I can recommend the glass bottom boat trip (you can book at the local tourist information) we saw our first black guillemots from this boat.

    Hope you enjoy Inverness, we have certainly added it too our 'Must go back to' list.

    I completely agree with that John! I went in May for the first time having never seen dolhins before. I drove up from Pitlochry, not knowing if they'd even be there, but they were! I was so overwhelmed that I had a few tears when I first arrived on the beach! I soon settled down to watch them entertain us all for 4 hours!!!! I will never forget that day, neither the feeling they gave me! Truly awesome!
