This should, perhaps, go in the "Where NOT to Watch Wildlife" section for this particular visit - except that there isn't one! On Sunday OH and I decided to visit Ashridge Estate, being a vast area of mature woodland and chalk downland. The purpose was to see autumn in all its glory with the added attractions of (amongst other things) fallow and muntjac deer, squirrels, edible dormice and, of course, birds.
Hmmm, it was HEAVING - which is really impressive for somewhere that large. Not only was there an Orienteering Competition, but there were sundry Scouts engaged on a practice hike in preparation for a half-term trip to Snowdon. And as for the dog-walkers.....
Add to that shotguns going off at regular intervals as folk were culling (deer, I assume - not Orienteerers or Scouts ☺☺☺) and you will begin to understand why the wildlife chose to keep a low profile. We saw no birds whatsoever - and only heard a few. The only squirrels I saw were one which OH nearly ran over and a second too far away to photograph which shot up a tree like a rat up a drainpipe when a shotgun went off. The deer were few and far between as well. At one point OH and I were walking a track obviously used by deer and I suddenly realised that several yards in front of us was a woman wearing a particularly vile and potent perfume. I could smell it long before I saw her so we gave up on that and drove to another section. This was a much better area, but only for muntjac deer - nearly all of whom managed to see us before we saw them.
The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!
Great photos Squirrel despite the 'conditions'! Love that holly! Seems to have done very well this year as all the trees around here are hanging with berries too!
A muntjac!! Wow! Well done you! Something I've never seen yet! They are supposed to be about in Shropshire but like most creatures, remain elusive!

I'm a Bird man and must plead ignorance, what is a muntjac? Love the tree shot by the way (number 2) thats the kind of tree I would draw as a child. The ideal tree, perfect!

For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.
Hi MarJus - there were loads of Muntjac. They pranced and boinged around all over the place through the bracken. They kept hurtling around in a wide circle - it was a bit like watching runners on a track but using pogo sticks and considerably faster.
Hi John - Muntjac are Chinese Water Deer. I will have a look through OH's pics and see if he managed a better picture than mine (which is the final one above).
Hi Squirrel - lovely photos, you did do well.
Like HM, love the tree, it looks so old.
Years ago I used to commute to London from where I lived by coach (not where I live now) - a 2 hour ride and admittedly most of it was spent asleep hanging over the arm rest at the back of the coach! However before my head used to nod, my eyes started to close and the snoring commenced, I would always look across the fields. Because we were higher up we were able to see above the boundary hedge and would see loads of muntjac grazing under the trees. It was a beautiful sight just as the sun was rising
