Hi all,
We're off to the New Forest in a couple of weeks for a few days - I have found a site that gives details of what birds you can expect to see in the summer but what can I expect to see at this time of year - barring of course larger animails i.e. deer and ponies.
If anyone has any ideas it would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Regards
Kerry

Well, there should be plenty of pigs as they will be out foraging for acorns (turned out each year for a few weeks in autumn as the acorns are poisonous to ponies etc...) ;-)
Went some years ago in October for a 'fungi foray' weekend. Found so many varieties!
Would imagine that there'll be plenty of jays about for the acorns, and by then, the fieldfares and redwings may be about on the heaths. All 3 woodpeckers, nuthatches, tree creepers and the tits and finches should all be about.
Dartford warblers are reputed to be in the Burley area & Denny wood.
Some nightjars are apparently present until November...
Then you have all the passing migrants, either leaving our shores or arriving for the winter!
Don't know if you've seen this site: http://www.newforestexplorersguide.co.uk/sitefolders/wildlife/birds/aasecondlevelnavigation/birdssecondlevelnavigation.html but it looks interesting with many more species listed!!
Have fun & don't forget that camera!! Look forward to hearing all about it!! :-)

Squirrel
Bingo! That was hard work.....
The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!
Wow! MarJus and Squirrel
Thank you so much both of you - all your links will cerainly keep us busy! I will have a look through later but now have to tackle the cat to take him to the vet for his shots!
Cheers!
