The nearest train station Kingussie is only one and a half miles from the marshes and it was half way along this walk that I saw seven Whooper Swans flying low heading right at me. The sun was shining and I got a real good look at one of the reasons for being there, that and the Hen Harriers.
I didn’t reach for my camera as it was safe in the bag and I was going to see plenty of them later! That’s right! That was my only sighting of the day, we learn the hard way again!
Not to worry what a place, at one end of the site is Ruthven Barracks. Just off the A9 to Inverness. I will stick to the train great views all the way, no stress and a nice pub meal next to the station no drink drive concerns! A very nice day out!!! :-)
The view from all points includes a mountain back drop. You will find more views from hides etc on my Flicker page. http://www.flickr.com/photos/40261931@N06/ (RSPB SITES)
I guess I can try and blame the view for my being too slack missing shots. Saw and missed Hen Harrier (too far away) Stoat (too slow, me that is not the Stoat!) and Whoopers (idiot)
All kinds of Ducks and Waders, picture opp’s no better than what I already have so passed. I would advise all visitors to take their best scope/lens as this is a very large marsh and many things you see will be at long range!
There are plans hanging in the information centre for a rebuild! this looks like it will be just the job (great stuff). Outside I had a dizzy moment with a flock of Long-tailed Tits in the tree above.
I will return in one month to see Whoopers and other winter visitors. This place will be spectacular in winter with all the mountains in their white coats, can't wait!
John
For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.
Sounds like a fabulous day and what a great variery of photo subjects! Another roe deer too! Something I'm keen to get a photo of!! Thanks for sharing!

That looks to be a wonderful site for nature and - as always - top class photos John. I have only ever seen long-tailed tits at my feeders so your shot of the "undercarriage" is a first viewing for me. Oooo I AM enjoying your posts...
The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!
