visit to Loch of Strathbeg, Aberdeenshire. RSPB

Plan for this week end is Strathbeg. So as much info or tips from previous visitors as I can get. Has anyone been lately and do they have advice? all welcome!

For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.

  • Well I've now been to the Loch of Strathbeg RSPB, very nice! The story of the day began with a Sparrow Hawk taking down a small wader and ending up getting deeper and deeper into the water as its prey soaked up the Loch.

All the action drew the attention of a passing Marsh Harrier.

On making its approach the Harrier, gets side-tracked by another smaller bird!

The Sparrow Hawk gets scared off.

The catch ends up as a meal for the nearest Gull!

This all played out in no more than couple of mins, Ace!

I will add a file for Strathbeg RSPB on my flicker site a link can be found on my page. Any RSPB sites I visit from now on will also be added. Along with Vane Farm! Hope someone finds it of help!

  • Great photos John and thanks for adding a "storyline" to them. It sounds as though you enjoyed your visit.

The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.

The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!

  • Hi John

I have been to Strathbeg RSPB, but it was so long long  ago now - it is a memory of the distant past

Your pictures of the BoP's are fabulous and well shot all at the right moment.  The Marsh Harrier is superb.

Taking pictures is about good timing (just as you mentioned earler to me), and you have good timing here

Love to hear more of your experiences

    Regards

    Kathy and Dave

  • My abiding memory of Starthbeg was of going there with the shop staff from Vane for an optics day. Slept overnight in the office block and the rooks around the centre woke me up at some ungodly hour. I then made the bad tactical decision of having a cup of tea before checking what was about and so missed the snow goose (still not seen one). Gutted! Lots of nice friendly people there though and a lovely day out.

Reedbed, freshwater scrapes, saltmarsh and wet meadow. Frampton Marsh has it all! Come and pay us a visit soon.

  • Great pics! Have never been despite it being just up the road.

Make the most of today because, unlike Sky+, there isn't a rewind button.
