.......... for the grey herons, at least. Despite it being a rather fresh day at Abberton Reservoir on Thursday the herons were clearly gearing up for Spring:
Apparently they are a bit of an early nesting bird but I was still surprised to see this level of activity in January!
I love seeing these in flight - well, that applies to all of the heron family, really.
Our herring gulls are red listed birds. Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.
I believe they are already nesting in Regent's Park
Unicum arbustum haud alit duos erithacos
(One bush does not shelter two Robins)
Zenodotus (3rd Century B.C.)
Agree that they are all so elegant in flight. No wonder they feature in some famous paintings and art.
You seem to have been quite near - I've only ever seen them in the distance! Lovely pics.
Yep, it's time to get the net checked on our pond. There's a heron that likes to make an annual visit, and a perfect photocall as well.
For those wondering, the photos were grabbed April 2017.

I noticed a lot of our local herons were 'hiding' in the trees the other day and then I saw one come down and collect a large branch, so it certainly looks like nesting has started up in the north, too.

Lovely set of action shots Clare. Yes, the Herons do seem to be early nesters.
