Cold, wet and windy weekend

Hi all

We went out to our local nature reserve on Sunday as it was meant to be the best weather over the weekend. It was really cold and windy and I kept having to put my camera under my waterproof jacket when it rained!

I saw these 2 geese that everyone was photographing, so I took a couple of shots. I heard someone say they were Egyptian Geese so I assume that's their correct ID. One has a very tight band around it's left leg, (rear goose in the photo) and the other would only stand on it's left leg, although it did unfold it's right leg and attempt to stand on it occasionally. It clearly couldn't stand on 2 legs though.

I also got a nice clear view of a Sedge Warbler rather than one stuck in the middle of the reeds or bushes like I usually get.

Sadly, I didn't see the Hobby.

Just before I left my old friend the male GSW visited my feeder. First time in ages!

Not my best bird watching weekend ever, but those are the breaks.

Best wishes Chris

  • Hi Chris,

Your photos are stunning. Well worth the effort of getting wet and cold. The left leg of the rear goose - it looks like it was ringed but someone took the ring off and it has left a mark in his skin, much like with us when our rings get too tight and we take them off.

I'm pleased you got your photo of the woodpecker on your feeder again.

Your wet and cold weather has travelled north today and is in our garden. It's awful

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Great pictures Chris. I was a dry and bright weekend in Scotland!!

    Living the dream.

  • Hi Sparrow

Thank you so much for your comments, You could be right about that ring. At least I can feel happier for that goose.

    Hi Flowerpot

    Thanks for that.

I can't begrudge you some dry bright weekends because on average we probably get more in the South. :-)

  • Hi Chris

Superb pictures. The egyptian geese may not be a native species but they are still very attractive birds to see. They both look as though they've got dodgy knees - perhaps it's arthritis due to the cold weather.

I think your photo of the sedge warbler is the best I've seen. He was very obliging to pose like that.

Glad you've got your GSW back. I haven't seen one in my garden since last autumn.

    Regards

    TJ

    Hi Chris

Fabulous pictures.  Gosh the 'ring' does look very tight on the Eyptian Goose's leg - not so good!

Love the Great Spotted Wodpecker - never tire of those at all.

Sedge Warbler is a little beauty.

    Regards

  • Hi TJ

I agree with you about the geese. They are lovely looking birds, but both of these had dodgy legs.

The sedge warbler was in the infamous area of scrub between the Black Swan Lake promontory and the path. I was looking for a grasshopper warbler, but I heard and saw only sedge warblers. He flitted around a lot and I stood in the long grass at the edge until I could see him. Then I followed him until I got this sequence of about a dozen photos of him on the side of the branch.

I was so pleased to see 'woody' back. I rattled off 27 shots of him.

    Thanks for your encouraging comments.

  • Hi Al & Kathy

Thank you both so much for your lovely comments. It encourages me to keep shooting.

I can't see clearly if that tightness on the gooses leg is a ring or the band one left behind, as Sparrow suggested.

    Shame about the hailstones Al.
