International Dawn Chorus Day

Is everyone getting up nice and early tomorrow for the dawn chorus?

Why is there never enough time?

  • Hi Ladybird

I hear the dawn chorus every morning, cannot sleep with the window shut

Of all creatures, man is the most detestable, he is the only creature that inflicts pain for sport, knowing it to be pain.

Ha! Me too!! Our resident Blackbird (known as Rodgerbird as he has a great song which incorporates the distinctive whistling of my neighbour Rodger) is first to start when it's pretty much still dark!!

  • Yes, I also hear it every morning at the moment, now we have our windows open. Better than any alarm clock, and then I can dose off back to sleep again!

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Its fantastic hearing the dawn chorus.  It's a fantastic alarm clock.  The blackbirds in my area tend to start when it's still mostly dark.

Warning!  This post contains atrocious spelling, and terrible grammar.  Approach with extreme edginess.

  • I lead a party yesterday for a Birdsong Breakfast, 50 people attended the 4.00am start.

It was done yesterday as I'm bird ringing this morning, hence typting this at 04.00am today.

We recorded 48 species in a few hours, but there were concerns that some migrants hadn't returned as yet.

No Garden Warblers, Redstart, Whitethroat, Lesser Whitethroat Reed Warblers or Sedge Warblers were heard on the reserve. These are species that have been recorded each year, we can only presume that they are a bit later this year.

  • Hi Buzzard,

That was a good turn out for your Birdsong Breakfast. Brilliant that so many are willing to make such an early start to listen to the bird song. I do envy you, and everyone, to be able to distinguish so many species.

I was woken this morning whilst it was still pitch black - well before dawn, by the blackbirds. Delightful.

    Cheers, Linda.

  • It was the light that woke me up this morning just after 6am (I fell back asleep till 9:30 but that's beside the point, lol) but it was nice to hear all the birds singing.

You had a good group there and what a nice idea!

The 'Birdman' article in today's Sunday Express mentions a book and cd about birdsong that he recommends.  I'm going to check it out later.
