..... in the Welsh countryside!!
Dad goes walking every Saturday, and last weekend, he walked in the Welshpool area and came across this 'sitting' in a field!!! It was some distance away but is quite clearly a vulture!!! An escapee I wonder? Had a look on the internet but no reports of 'missing vultures' anywhere!

Rockwolf said:Poor thing! It looks rather 'small' though. Dad said this one was very big (over 1 m high)....
I agree it looks much bigger than Turkey Vulture which has a length of about 70cm. I wonder if it could be a Lappet-faced Vulture. They are much bigger. Take a look at this link.

Hi all
I also thought it was a Lappet faced vulture because of the size plus the look of the head and face.
Best wishes Chris

hi MarJus
Amazing sight to see a vulture like you have.
Not a sight to see everyday and to me escapee does ring true here - whether a Zoo, escapee from captivity, or private collecter {hate that term private collector}- hope that it can look after itself and does not fall foul of anything.
Let us know any further news
Regards
Kathy and Dave
Wow, thats a really big Chicken.

Is it a Willow or Marsh Vulture :-} are we going down the numbers route or does it visit feeding stations LOL Buzzard Nature Is Amazing - Let Us Keep It That Way

Hi MarJus
Good grief - what a photo, and here I was revelling in that I had a female blackcap for one day!
I wonder if it goes in for nyger seed on a 20 port feeder, the reason I ask is no other **gger does in my garden!

'Struth MarJus! You do find some wonderful birds and now your Dad's getting in on the act.
Who's taking the bets on "how long before Sparrow has one in her garden now she's got her new camera"!
The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!
LOL Squirrel - if I got one of those in my garden all my hair would stand on end, my blood would drain, and I'd be the one calling the men in white coats to take me away!!
Many, many years ago we visited a zoo in Guernsey, or maybe Jersey, where they had an old vulture. He was tame and freely walking round. They had an appeal going for donations to buy him a mate as his wife had died and he was pining away. I have to say he was the oddest looking bird I have ever seen, and he was huge. Our daughter was about 10 at the time, and he was almost as tall as she was.
Cheers, Linda.

Hi,
it looks like an American Turkey vulture- the head pattern is wrong for American Black or European (monk) Black vulture. Lappet faced is not in the ball park :)
