night visitor

hi all, i live in the Neath area of South Wales and for the last few nights (anytime from 11pm till about 4am) i have been hearing a rather strange noise i thought it was geese but on listening further i now know it isn't i am starting to wonder if it could possibly be an eagel owl.  anyone got any ideas on this.

  • I live in Kent UK and have heard every Owl outside my window from a barn Owl to a Little Owl and then for 2 months or so we heard what we thought were Geese flying up the road and landing in the tree outside making geese kinda noises, whatever it was and I suspected a Euro eagle owl was taking ducks from the pond every night ...

What does the noise sound like?

There's plenty of nocturnal animals that make odd noises .. the simple hedgehog being amongst them.

Woodcocks make a deep throated croaking noise.

like wierd geese i live in the counrtyside and my hobbies are wildlife and bird watching, hedgehogs birds coughing sheep etc i have heard but this is a new one on me i have listened every night since i first heard it and the noise is stationery and in the woods behind my property i thought it was geese but its not coz i'm surrounded by trees and i am sure the geese aren't up any of them.  also heard woodcock and nightjars not them either

Try googling Eagle Owl Call and see if there is any audio out there in Interweb land .. bound to be I would have thought.

Why do you hope it's not an Eagle Owl by the way?

Hi again i have been listening to owl calls and the nearest i can find is a Scops owl have a listen and what do you think

  • In reply to taffy:

Taffy, your in my neck of the woods, where abouts is the sound?

    could you record it?

There has been a known eagle owl in Maesteg, and these birds have a huge base range, so not completely out of it.

    Hi Taffy,

Have you checked if there are any records of eagle owls or other unusual owls being in your area?

That should help narrow the field a bit!
