How do you buy yours.....

Hi there

How do you buy your bird food?

Do you order on-line, or do you buy from a Stockist like the RSPB

Do you buy in bulk, or what you can afford.

What is the foodstuff you use most of?

Any secrets to save money?

Regards

Kathy and Dave

  • Hi Kathy,

as you know from another thread. I purchase all my seed in bulk through a local nature reserve were I volunteer.

I purchase my Nyjer seed in bulk from http://www.arkwildlife.co.uk/acatalog/info_DYIS_00.html

I make all my own suet treats, I purchase a huge block of beef suet from a local butcher for £11.00 this will make dozens of coconut halves, which I add seed and meal worms to.

I also make suet cakes again using the suet and other ingredients.

I did purchase all my feeders from the RSPB, except the Goldfinch Flocker. I also use to purchase most of the bird seed and suet nibbles etc from them but it become to expensive.

  • 20 Kg sacks !!!

"Feed the birds, tuppence a bag" Mary Poppins

  • When I fed the birds last time I bought the seed direct from a supplier that my OH is friends with, I think it was about £19 for a 25kg sack of sunflower hearts!  But my OH got it for free because he works on the computers there, should have ordered a bag of peanuts then he would have been getting paid peanuts lol

I buy mainly bulk online, Sunflower hearts, Peanuts, Wild Bird mix, Safflower, Large tub of suet mix & Nyger. I buy mealworms, peanut granules, cake, suet pellets, husk free seed mixes & fruit locally.

I use WigglyWigglers & Food4Wildbirds, the latter being the most reliable company without hitches.

My problem is that I am unable to have a decent sized shed in my garden as it's so small & on a slope. I don't have a garage either. I have to store my sacks of food in outdoor storage bins.

I am hoping to get one more bin so that I can order suet pellets in bulk next year as I have spent a fortune on them this year.

I am hoping my mealworm breeding will be hugely successful & won't need to buy them soon. (They are at the beetle/ breeding stage at the moment).

If I won the lottery I would have a specialist bulk food storage garage attatched to my fantasy house & wildlife garden (aswell as ornamental garden). My textile/ art studio would be on the back of the house with huge windows so I can watch the birds etc all day whilst working My other half would still be sent to work / volunteer as he would drive me mad all day every day lol. Ohhhhhhhhhh it's so nice to dream. :-)

Now there's an idea, My step brother is a butcher, I never buy meat from butchers shops as I prefer it covered whilst on display. But I am sure he could get me some cheap cheap cheap beef suet for the birds :-)

  • I buy bulk when I can, cheaper. I also shop around.

some farm shop can be good, but not all. I'm lucky I have a couple of wholesellers near me.

Hey farmer, farmer, put away the D.D.T now. Give me spots on my apples, but leave me the birds and the bees, please!

    Hi Buzzard

You have some great practical ideas going there.

I have to say that I find the Nyger Seed can really mount up and can vary in price form place to place.

The idea of the suet in the coconut shells .... yes .... I like that as I hate throwing the coconut shells out as I feel it is a waste and i can use them in other ways.  They are robust and weatherproof too.

I have far too many feeders at the moment and some really need to be thrown out as they have become so battered looking (all the high winds when we stayed in remote places) - including our most expensive purchase and that is a Peanut Feeder with wooden ends (£14)

Each time we move the Bird Food/Feeders have to be upgraded to go wit the situation.

What does a Goldfinch Flocker look like?  Is it a large Nyger Seed Feeder?

    Regards

    Good idea ND {thumbs up}

We can afford that quite easily, and have a wheely bin to store the seed in.

    Hi Kathy,

If you click on the link I posted earlier in this thread it is the feeder I have in my garden.
