Hello all
I don't know anything about birds and their behaviour so would really appreciate your help and advice. We are used to seeing many blue tits in our garden, they particularly like our Berberis. Since yesterday afternoon, two blue tit chicks have been pecking on the window pane and flying around the window, seeming to us like they want to come into the house! I have read that birds sometimes peck at the putty around window frames but these two birds do not appear to be doing this, they are just flitting about the window and then pecking on the actual pane. We're worried that they may be in distress, why might they be behaving like this and is there anything we can do to help them?

Probably see their reflection, and try to warn off any other birds. They are looking to nest nearby I expect, and are guarding their territory. You say chicks, I doubt they are chicks, it's too early for chicks I think, they will be laying shortly.

Thanks so much for responding, we're relieved that there's nothing wrong with them. We thought they were chicks because they seem to be more "fluffy" than we're used to seeing. We'll take your advice and try to break up the reflection. I have a picture of one of the birds so will try upload it!

It should stop in a month or so when the mating/nesting season is over, but in the meantime if you are worried about the birds harming themselves you could hang hawk scarers in the window:

I guess the tradeoff is that this might scare the birds away from the garden completely, and if they are planning on nesting nearby they might change their minds...
As it is a Long-tailed Tit it may well be looking for spider webs and little spiders etc that are around the windows, mine tap on the window to let me know the feeder is empty.

We had a blue tit pecking at our window for several weeks last year, and couldn't make out at first why he was doing it. We realised after a while that he could see his reflection in the glass and was probably defending his territory by attacking what he thought was a potential rival! Eventually he took up residence in a nesting box in our garden and after breeding there his family started arriving at our feeders. Below are some pictures of him at the window, and one of the arrival of his family. It was a lovely sight to behold.
In the above picture, the two chicks on the left are Great Tits.

Whats lovely photos, its really good to see them fledge from the nestbox, we had four bluetit chicks fledge year before last from our nesting box in the garden.
Also we had a robin jumping up and pecking at the glass window of the shed, because he could see his reflection and thought he had a rival I put some card over the window for a short time and it solved the problem.
