First eggs of 2010?

I was at troup today and was pleased to see at least one pair of gannets sitting on an egg. I read an article about the first eggs being layed on the Bass rock today. I thought eggs were layed later at Troup?

May your eyes be opened by the wonderful.

    Hi James,

This does seem a little early to me also, although "The Atlantic Gannet", Bryan Nelson (1978) gives mid-April as the mean laying time, so I guess it's about right for the species...

Thanks for posting this. It is always nice to have a confirmed date for such things - this is the first egg of the season as far as I'm aware which means, allowing an incubation period of around 43 days, we can expect the first chick around May 30th weekend. Will look forward to that!

    Thanks,

    Duncan Goulder
