Not the mallards, the small wader beyond them :)
It looked brown and pale grey to me (not the alarming grey of the water rail). Wondered if it was a snipe looking grey in the distance?

From what I can see of the bird - trace of head barring, grey belly - stripy spotting on breast, and the location - in a reedbed would all be OK for snipe

Thanks, went back to look in R4 again this morning and there were two snipes. I managed to get a more recognisable blobby photo of one of them. :)
