Paid our first ever visit to the wetlands on Good Friday and very impressed - the reed beds were amazing and although we didnt see anything unusual in them we were gifted (thanks to a lovely lady and her daughter who were obviously old hands at spotting and pointed it out to us) with a look at our first every firecrest and my first close up view of goldcrests. We also spent a lovely hour in the hide watching a very friendly toad getting amorous and listening to some wonderful birdsong including a booming bittern and was even rewarded with a beautiful sunset and a view out of the cafe window onto I believe a buzzard looking for his tea - Cant wait to return now, hopefully find the lagoons next time too
Nice photos there NNN, glad you enjoyed your day.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Lovely pics there, love the swan at the end amongst the reed beds but the little goldcrest is fabulous, thanks for posting.
Lot to learn
It is a lovely place, NNN, and I can't wait to go back. Thanks for posting your photos and I look forward to seeing more. I love the Swan against the blue ripples.
Kind regards, Ann
Thanks Guys, was blown away by how wonderful this place is - what a little gem, hard to believe your literally 10/15mins away from a city !
Photos give a really nice flavour of all the different habitats there at the Wetlands. You never know what birds to expect, not just water birds. We can't manage without our weekly visit.
Even my son and his girlfriend are paying a visit tomorrow as the bug has bitten them :)
Thank you Nicky, it's wonderful to have another contributor on this forum as so many of our friends have stopped posting. it was so enjoyable reading about your visit and the fact that you have seen a Firecrest and heard a Bittern is typical of how the Wetlands never fails to surprise.
To get to Goldcliff lagoons instead of turning down West Nash road to the RSPB reserve continue towards Goldcliff until you get to this spot. Grid reference 51.54220,-2.91030. Park on the grass verge on the left and walk over the road and cross the bridge. In a few yards you will see a gate on your left and once you have gone through the gate hides one and two will be visible. There is a further hide by the sea wall.
Thank you John - hoping weather will be good enough Sunday to find our way to the lagoons
