Hello Minsmere - this is Swamp_Sparrow from the Norwich team calling (I am a sad Euroviosion fan!)
Had taken half of the week off work this week and what did I decide to do but join a guided walk about "Discovering Minsmere". Yes, I know I work for the RSPB so why do I want to spend my holiday there? Well, when we regional staff visit Minsmere we are normally tucked away in the tiny office area so rarely get to see a breathing animal other than a human! I personally am really keen to learn more about the species and habitats we are trying to protect, be they the facisnating anttlion seen recently on BBC1 or the bittern, marshie, bearded tit, water vole or otter etc.
Today I took part in the guided walk lead expertly, interestingly and humourously by volunteer guide Liz the whole group had a fabulous time and a few giggles along the way and more knowledge that I can possibly process (note to self - book another walk with Liz!). We had wonderful viewings of bearded tits along the North Wall, great F & M smew sightings, marsh harriers, pintail and a lovely kingfisher (kingfisher and bittern in the afternoon after I had highjacked another volunteer guide Nick in the afternoon! ;-) ). I won't bore you but over 50 spots for the day (and I'm a beginner!)
Loved the new Island Mere hide, great seats that let you swing around easily when tracking sightings. Visitors centre and cafe standing up brilliantly under the circumstances.
Doubtlessly I'll be back there for work soon but if I have my way I'll be back off-duty a lot sooner!!
Thank you very muchRSPB Minsmere for a fantastic day out!
Janie (AKA Swamp_Sparrow)
Thanks for your feedback - I'll pass on your thanks to Liz and Nick
