An early start for a wander around the reserve on a sunny day.

I started the day at about 6.30am with a walk through the reed beds down to the sluice, I saw brief glimpses of many birds but nothing settled enough for a photo, but it was quite breezy.

Once out onto the dunes things improved, lots of Linnets and the odd Stonechat.

The first to pose was this Reed Bunting.

Then this juvenile Stonechat.

Then another juvenile Stonechat was flitting about in the breeze.

Further along towards East Hide I saw this Whitethroat.

I'm not sure if I was watching one very mobile bird or more than one but it or they would perch and sing, hop about then do an ascending flight and settle further along.

Overhead some Sandwich Terns.

From East Hide I watched these two Avocets. First the male spending ages preening in preparation.

Finally the event.

Followed by the apparent show of affection afterwards.

Then back off to feeding.

Kittiwake flying over.

More Avocets sorting nesting sites.

A couple of Common Terns taking a break.

A third Tern flew over them and caused this little dispute.

All the while there were Sand Martins skimming over the water in front of the hide, so to finish my time at East Hide I tried to capture a few shots. Given how far from the hide they were I quite pleased with the results.

Al of this by 8.30 in the morning.

I went home early but quite satisfied with my morning out.

Best Wishes,

Trevor.
