Weekly Chat, Sunday March 6, 2011

Welcome to another week. Do check back lest you miss the pics of many and varied birds plus a certain Toffee. And lots of news of course. Diane had another thunderstorm.

Diane - Uncontrollable children in olden days. Children were sent out to "service" as young as 10. Of course they ran away, thus breaking "Masters & Servants Act". Probably broke other laws as humans do. There were probationary school from which they also ran away. I found some twigs on my family tree who were regularly in trouble with the law - for playing the wicked game of two-up in pubs! Their 13 year old brother went one better (ahem), he broke into a school.

Patriciat - So sorry your OH has fallen again. Don’t worry about moaning to us. We do understand. I’m sending blue skies and healing thoughts to your house.

Our spring bulbs are appearing - confused by the unseasonal rain a few weeks ago. Poor things, there’s another possible 3 weeks of hot weather (34C so far today) and winter rains are not usual until May.

Whoo hoo. Less than 3 weeks to OR Day (Osprey Return day). I wonder what soap opera saga they have for us this year!

  • Decided to face heavy rain and go to Bird Cub, despite being about The Gambia.  Some PPT pics of birds, but the guy organises birding hols there, so it seemed more like an advert such as “at this habitat you would see the brightly coloured xyz” … without the actual birds!  And actually he isn’t a very good photographer – I think he’s more of a twitcher, hoping to keep adding birds to his list.  So. rather disappointing, but did have a wee word with Emma, from WWT Caerlaverock, formerly from SWT LotL.

Wendy – pleased car is ready for its big adventure – and that snow has gone so tyres are suitable.  Can see the duck now!

Annette – sorry about television – pleased they say they will respond appropriately this time!

AQ – that was a quick decision – great to look forward to as well as to enjoy it at the time.  Which parts of Germany will you see?

Gary – you’ll have to get fastenings (as used fro children) for the young lady so she can’t pull it on top of herself again!  Pleased she wasn’t hurt this time.

Terry – no advice re email notifications, I didn’t want them and prefer to go to my own last post and read forward from there – but I mostly restrict myself to this thread (and daily during the season) and just randomly look at others.  July would be good for Bassenthwaite – see more of the young ones!

And now “it’s Good Night from me …”

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Hi everyone. The weather here has become somewhat damp and dreich over the past day. We've also had a bit of wind. The new freezer arrived yestrarday, which means things are back to normal as far as food storage goes.

I notice we're up to 400 members, so a very warm welcome to the new people. Thanks to everyone for all your posts, pictures and links.

    Happy Wednesday!

  • Terry - This morn I was timed out and had to come in via "side door'. Then my posts too were said to be timed out, but on checking, they had posted. Gremlins just keeping us on our toes!!!!

Diane: Good luck with the remodeling and the political stuff (should we look for you on the 11 o'clock news?).

Maybe, if you look very closely. LOLOL I'll be protesting at the capitol (Indianapolis) tomorrow. The prediction is that 30,000+ people will be participating. I'll be standing with a contingent of retired school teachers.

  • I saw a Black-Capped Chickadee in my garden for the first time this spring! Woo-hoo! They have a lovely little dee-dee dee-dee call.

  • OG: I'm sorry that you're feeling so poorly. Bless your heart. If I recall correctly, you're due for a shot soon? Try to get plenty of rest and don't push yourself to do anything. Just take care of the most important tasks, and yell no at anyone who wants you to do anything else. Hope you feel better soon! Sorry that Bird Club was disappointing. The naturalists at our local state park are giving a lecture on owls next month. I think I might go. Good wishes to Eagle-Eye from me! By the way, OG, isn't your birthday at the end of this month?

Annette: I think I'd be losing my temper at someone about that television. At this point, they should give you a brand, spankin' new one. And a bigger, fancier one, too. Dang! Hope you get it all sorted this time.

Margo: I hope you have a safe and wonderful trip to Italy!!!
Gary: Hope you're safe from the northeast flooding. Looks bad there. Adorable puppy pics, as usual.
TerryM: Congrats for getting invited to the Bassenthwaite programme!
Brenda: Congrats on the Good Egg Award. Yay! Yay! Yay!
Joan: Go barn owls!!! I'm hopin' for some courtin' in the nest box!
    Lynette: Love that giraffe!

    G'night all.

  • That's a beautiful wee bird, Diane.  Thanks for the pics :-)

  • Morning all We've had a very windy night.  Something rattling around on the roof.  It woke me about 5.00am and kept disturbing me until I gave up and came downstairs.  Can't see it from back garden and a view of the front will require me to cross the road.  Don't want to do that in my dressing gown!  Started coughing yesterday evening and still doing so.  I'll try the old faithful cough remedy.

Gary Toffee is just totally adorable - I could cuddle her,

AQ Good for you coming to a quick decision about trip to Germany.  Hope you'll enjoy it.

OG Do take care when you're not feeling 100%.  Hope your steroid injection will help.  Used to help me when the asthma was bad - it lifted one's mind as well as helping the physical condition.  Is your birthday really later this month?   Mine too!

Crufts starts today and I have paid to watch the online TV coverage so may not be on here as much for the next few days.

  • Hi Everyone: Was woken at 6am by a howling gale and something lashing at the bedroom window. Looked out fearing the worst ( total whiteness ) but so happy to find it was just rain so maybe the BBC doom and gloom forecast was wrong...once more. Still blowing a gale but the sun is out there, the birds have their crampons on once again.

Margo: Enjoy your few days away. Went to Italy when I was 14 ( hundreds of years ago ) with my school, Florence, Rome and Sorrento saw some amazing things. Loved Florence and Pompeii. Still fiddling with bits and bobs for my trip. Making sure the freezer is well stocked but I do rely on Asda or Tescos for fresh milk etc for OH.Hair cut today...have to look good when I see my girls.

AQ: Spur of the moment things are quite often the best.

Heron: Do you work nights or just a night owl?

Off for a windy walk...so everyone have a good day.
