Welcome to another week. Do check back lest you miss the pics of many and varied birds plus a certain Toffee. And lots of news of course. Diane had another thunderstorm.
Diane - Uncontrollable children in olden days. Children were sent out to "service" as young as 10. Of course they ran away, thus breaking "Masters & Servants Act". Probably broke other laws as humans do. There were probationary school from which they also ran away. I found some twigs on my family tree who were regularly in trouble with the law - for playing the wicked game of two-up in pubs! Their 13 year old brother went one better (ahem), he broke into a school.
Patriciat - So sorry your OH has fallen again. Don’t worry about moaning to us. We do understand. I’m sending blue skies and healing thoughts to your house.
Our spring bulbs are appearing - confused by the unseasonal rain a few weeks ago. Poor things, there’s another possible 3 weeks of hot weather (34C so far today) and winter rains are not usual until May.
Whoo hoo. Less than 3 weeks to OR Day (Osprey Return day). I wonder what soap opera saga they have for us this year!
Evening all: Long post alert so feel free to scroll down since nothing of great import following. Had a long day, but got a lot done; plan to spend tomorrow working in the garden (which is never work). Now to catch up on all the posts.
AQ: Thanks for starting new thread. A family twig who broke into a school? Not to get the homework he’d forgotten I imagine. Wasn't it the first day of Fall in S.A. just last week – and now you’ve got spring bulbs? Hmmm.
Margobird: Don’t look now, but I darned a pair of socks last week! (Well, sewed up a hole is more like it). Call me quaint. Please say hallo to Billy Whizz from all of us on the blog.
George: So nice to hear that you and Diesel are taking in the local nature sites. Are you going to Bonnie Loch Leven with the Campbells? (Sorry, couldn’t resist that! Very corny I know.)
Tiger and Chloe: Nice to see you survived osprey off-season. That GHO looks positively sinister. What were the reasons given for the loss of so many U.S. ospreys last year?
Alan: Good news about the bald eagle who tried to hitch a ride, especially that it was released in its own neighborhood. Wonder if those Cape Code folks know about LG. I’m sure you put the leash on Hamish and not your better half (but we'll wonder if we hear that OH has dragged her blanket out into the garden!)
Gary: Hope your OH got her computer crisis solved. “Sorting out the rest” obviously involves photos sessions with Ms Toffee!
Heather: See how much we learn on this blog – all kinds of exciting news from Finland and now a major source of help to crossword afficionados. My OH and I are going to see The King’s Speech on Tuesday. Saw Logue’s grandson on telly several times over the last few weeks talking about the documents that were found.
Lynette: Thanks for reminding us what EJ and Odin look like (not that we could forget). But oh my, that bird is that in the last photo,,,,,, Doesn’t look happy or healthy! I’m a big Vaughn Williams fan too - very “English” music.
Terry: I saw you in that video – you have long blonde hair and we wearing a plum/gray outfit, right? I love Sibelius’ music too.
OG: Glad you enjoyed the fair. We must have the same shed that you have – what is it about sheds that makes them so impossible to clean out!? The garden man came by to pick up a check, but since he hadn’t completed everything, OH held back some $$$s, which “insulted” the garden man. Sigh.
Wendy: Good to hear spring has sprung. When we get daffs, they’re flown in (hate to think of the large carbon footprint involved), along with tulips, narcissus and lilac.
Patricia: I’m so sorry to hear that your OH had yet another fall. That’s so distressing! Does your OH have a wheelchair or a walker (Zimmer frame)? I assume he had the phone with him this time? Has Fly got naughty all of a sudden or is she just out of the habit of competing?
Diane: Clearly, you have superior PBS programming in Indiana! No sign of Behind the Britcom here right now. L
Heron: Got lost in Sports Authority today, trying on yet more shoes, but frankly I don’t feel right with my feet all done up in g metallic grays, pinks, blues and/or lime greens. Quite scary color combos out there!
Anyway, I'm falling asleep so likely to for bed soon. Take care everyone - especiallly thse i missed. Have a good Sunday.
Patriciat so sorry to hear about your day. Hope your OH is ok. It doesn't do to bottle things up.
Hi all! Oh, I am so envious reading your posts about appearing crocuses, daffodils etc. It is winter still up here, but there are signs of spring - temps have truly changed, hardly any double digits even in nights and there has been few PLUS C degrees some days. Today -4 and predicted number for night is -12C. Of course the amount of snow is still huge but with these temps and sun shine it will start melt soon! And the birds have became vocal again, hurray!!!!
TerryM, thanks for that Ravel -link. I think I spotted you. Glad to hear you like Sibelius, I do too. BTW he was born in this town where I live
Diane, I am full of admiration for you - stitching yourself - WOW. I think I never could do that, I only take them off so if you want me to come and remove them give me a call LOL
Hope SheilaFE has a nice time in Switzerland and Linda in Canaries (?)
Annette & Diane, re Finland, yes some things are really good here, but we are also usually in top3 in suicide ratings (especially young men), alcohol usage etc…. And of course our great health/social services mean very high income taxes (but I gladly make that effort). Maybe our “chilly” winters has something to do with our male’s nut-situation LOL (TerryM no dictionary needed LOLLOL) But am afraid that intolerance, racism and egotism is increasing here. But altogether I think this is a good place to live (thinking of the happenings at The Arab Street)
Brenda, only Latin I know are few phrases and some work-related words :)
Margo, sooo glad Billy is talking to you! My cat says miau (meouw in Finnish) to him
OG, signed Bear Petition few days ago
Toots, welcome :))
Gary, love Tofster pics, especially the sleeping beauty
Patricia, so sorry your OH’s fall
I hope each and everyone has a nice week. Can hardly wait ospreys returning, does anybody know when the nest cams at LG and LotL will start?
my photos in flickr
Morning all,
No time to reply to everyone but just a few.
Tiger : Glad you are over your op and all is well.
Patriciat : Sorry to hear about your OH s fall. Its a great compliment to everyone on here that you feel able to offload on this forum.
Gary : More great pics of Toffee.
Lynette: Thanks for all you pics. That GHO looks mighty wet. It would have been better finding a large nestbox rather than an ospreys nest.
Weather is much the same a s always. Cold and cloudy but at least it is dry.
Some peregrine news:
Some Exciting news:
Later news - BEATRICE started migration after 11am on 3rd March
Brilliant news, Alan. I wonder if EJ has begun her journey yet, 19 days to go!
Alan, great great news :))))))
This one is for Diane ( and other owl fans) http://www.lintukuva.fi/markus/1109.php
Yes great news about Beatrice. Brings the new season into reality now :)
Have a good Sunday all.
ChloeB & Tiger's Osprey Data
Good morning all, sun is now out but still a very chilly wind. Fingers went white when I was doing by bird thing this morning. Mustn't moan though it is certainly better than rain which we haven't had for quite a few days now. OH has gone to work this morning as he has a lot to catch up with before we go away.
patriciat so sorry you had a bad day yesterday with your OH's fall and fly being naughty. As you can see don't worry about offloading how you feed, we are all here for you and that is why this site is so nice. Lots of caring people ever ready to understand how you must be feeling. Hope OH is not too sore today after his fall.
Lynette thanks for your captures, the GHO looked a bit miserable sitting there in the wet. What large birds they are, Can well imagine osprey would not want to take them on to regain their nest.
Heron 77 loved the description of the war with the weather. Hope you will have sun today.
Annette I am impressed, darning socks whatever next. I will say hello to Billy Whizz for you. He is around so much more now and for the last 2 nights has been sleeping under our car so OH always has to check now before moving off.
Diane we always say our weather here gives us a lot to talk about but your weather is something else. Now you have had a good storm but pleased to see that the creek was OK and as you say the house has stood for 150 years and has had all sorts of weather thrown at it.
Tiger was sorry to read about your problem with gall stones, not very pleasant at all. Glad you are back to good health and looking foward to the return of our ospreys. Thanks for the GHO pic taken when it was dry, quite an impressive bird and no wonder the ospreys are wary. Thanks also for the link to the video.
finicky welcome and thanks for the link to the osprey pic. Hope the female turns up soon as I thought the females always arrived first.
Gary sorry to read about your OH's computer problems, so annoying for her. Thanks for lovely pics of Toffee, what a gorgeous girl she is.
WendyB pleased to read that your OH is not so stressed now. Thanks for the link to Arne, very interesting and it would be wonderful if juvenile ospreys did make use of the facility. I would be over there all the time come hell or high water. Hope you have a good walk today if you make it to LG.
original goldfinch so pleased your son is going to the doctor about his bad chest, very wise to do so. I am glad I am not the only one who talks to animals. Not only do I prattle away to Billy but I also talk and whistle to the birds in the garden. OH thinks I am losing the plot at times.
Alan thanks to the link to the osprey return at Cape Cod but not such good news that ospreys have had a hard time over the winter. Great news about Beatrice now starting on her migration, hope she arrives safely. The cams at Worcester are brilliant, really spoilt for views there with 5 cams to watch.Good news about the 4 eggs for Appio and Vergine. That bald eagle was really lucky to survive but I do like a story with a happy ending. Thanks for your good wishes for our break in Italy, will be setting off on Friday.
dibnlib glad to see a post from you. Some of the things people do when driving beggar belief, espeically on the M25 which is one of my most unfavourite motorways. Everyone seems to be going at such a speed. Have my eyes shut a lot of the time when we have to travel down it to see OH's Mum.
Brenda H thanks for the news about the sperm whale, very sad that it died of starvation and dehydration.
george g so pleased to see that you are enjoying time with Diesel and enjoying your walks together. Hope you anage to get to Loch Leven today. It would be nice to think that Billy will miss us but as long as he has food and milk he will be quite happy. Someone is coming in to feed and put milk out for him daily.
ChloeB nice to see you but guess we will be seeing you a lot more soon with the return of the ospreys.
auntie good to see temperatures are improving for you and there is a hint of Spring in the air. Thanks for the link to the owl pic sitting in the snow.
Margobird
PATRICIAT sorry to hear about your bad day, what with Fly misbehaving and OH falling. What a worry for you. My Grandpa had Parkinsons and most of the time he couldn't walk but about twice a day he somehow Knew he could manage a trip down his beloved garden, Unfortunately he would often overestimate his abilities, would fall and have to be resued by neighbour. So very sad.
GARY lovely pic, but surely she is toffee coloured, not gold!!!
