Weekly Chat, Sunday March 6, 2011

Welcome to another week. Do check back lest you miss the pics of many and varied birds plus a certain Toffee. And lots of news of course. Diane had another thunderstorm.

Diane - Uncontrollable children in olden days. Children were sent out to "service" as young as 10. Of course they ran away, thus breaking "Masters & Servants Act". Probably broke other laws as humans do. There were probationary school from which they also ran away. I found some twigs on my family tree who were regularly in trouble with the law - for playing the wicked game of two-up in pubs! Their 13 year old brother went one better (ahem), he broke into a school.

Patriciat - So sorry your OH has fallen again. Don’t worry about moaning to us. We do understand. I’m sending blue skies and healing thoughts to your house.

Our spring bulbs are appearing - confused by the unseasonal rain a few weeks ago. Poor things, there’s another possible 3 weeks of hot weather (34C so far today) and winter rains are not usual until May.

Whoo hoo. Less than 3 weeks to OR Day (Osprey Return day). I wonder what soap opera saga they have for us this year!

  • Sorry everyone, didn't get a pic of the BW removal lorry.  I think I may have looked a little suspicious taking a pic of someone elses furniture being unloaded!

Great snaps Alan thank you. It's a shame we don't get to see 'our' family so clearly.

  • Annette - My tomato bushes are staked but one stake has toppled sideways, allowing easy access to the agile. Also the stolen fruit were the only ripe ones - I was a bit slow picking them!

Diane & Margo - Sure, we have possums in Australia. They do tend to get in people’s roof spaces causing a mess. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Possum
And then there is "Possum Magic", a famous children’s book by Adelaide author Mem Fox. http://www.memfox.com/possum-magic-2.html

Patriciat - Thinking of you and hoping your visitor has helpful positive suggestions on Friday.

Margo - Have a great holiday in sunny Italy. BTW don’t be surprised if Billy Whiz is not quite as friendly when you return. Pets seem to punish their humans for deserting them. It will only be temporary.

It is 3 years since I had an overseas holiday. (OH has different likes, so we now take separate holidays.) Last time I spent at least 6 months reading travel books, Googling websites, making lists, planning, planning. I then pruned the vast travel options to 4 weeks, hiring a car to potter around Yorkshire & Scottish villages. For the past year at the back of my mind I have been vaguely thinking of visiting Germany. (One of my ancestors came from there.) I like to "do my own thing", but . . . too difficult to drive on "wrong" side of road, to cope with foreign language, to drag bag on & off trains & buses. Instead I collected a brochure and suddenly in a week The Decision made, I’m booked on a bus (sorry, coach) tour of Germany in May/June, adding in few days before & after, making 3 weeks away. I’m still in shock. Never before have I made such decisions in such haste!!!!!

  • Awww, Gary, so much choice and she has to sleep on the floor. LOL

  • AQ, I know. Incredible isn't it! Not long after this, she stretched out and knocked the fire guard on top of her! I had to laugh as she wasn't hurt but she was less than impressed.

Just read about your trip to Germany. Fantastic. What a great sounding trip. Well done you. Know second guessing it now, just look forward to it:)

  • Just read back and enjoyed all the posts and captures. Amazing what everyone has going on. Great to read . Love all the pictures and updates. Thanks one and all

Please don't hold your breath for  TT webcam will you....lolol

  • Just a reminder that the first hatch at Hampton is expected this weekend:

Also a reminder that Crufts starts tomorrow

  • Super zooming at Decorah and 9000 viewers:

  • Not only am I getting the server error and the post not looking as if it has posted (but it has), but my email notifications have stopped, so now I would have to go in to each discussion to see what is happening (which I won't do).  Is anyone else getting this?  I think Margo has email notifications turned on.

OG, I don't have a date for Bassenthwaite yet, we decided we would go to Scotland in May, as usual, so I think I will have to do it later rather than April which I originally hoped for. I fancy nest guard duties.

    Terry in Cumbria

  • Terry, I get the "timeout expired" screen all the time but I haven't got the notifications turned on so don't know about those. very odd.
