Asha & Brodie

The partnership has matured this season, with Asha continuing her good female role (and she loves nest-building) and Brodie being more reliable, both fishing and incubating.

The pair have fought their way thru all kinds of nasty weather - snow, wind and rain - and intruders, including the dreaded KL5 Klive, have been a nuisance but not dangerous...

so far.

EDIT

********

Sadly, the month of May heralded irresistible aggression from BlueKL5 "Klive", who had ruined the end of last season for the 2 juvies.

Within the first 2 days Klive had driven Brodie from the area (tho Brodie did return a couple of times to dive-bomb Klive, to no effect) and destroyed the eggs.  He commenced to woo Asha clumsily, selfishly and inappropriately, as can be seen from the following pages.

A very uncomprehensive summary of Klive's on-cam day:

  • 22 August 2024

All very quiet so far, with one short visit by Klive.  Grey and overcast, and still windy.

The cam panned and searched several times, both near and far.  Some lovely views, but no sign of any osprey.

    Pine marten deterrent

10.15     Klive landed on the nest and pottered – nest cam

10.16     PTZ suddenly stopped panning and returned to the nest, to Klive.  He had a bit of preening, while keeping an eye on all round him.  Was he expecting a visitor!  The cam still keeps glitching or faltering.

10.24     In a glitch he lay in the cup – has he nest cupped?  Then back to moving sticks

10.29     Just to show 'e woz 'ere

10.32     After standing and watching for a while he flew off – nest cam towards bottom right

11.24 side view of the nest

12.21     No sign of him on the nest since he left.

  • All very quiet so far apart from the appearance of the spider on nest cam.  It was there at daybreak, and disappeared at 10.35 leaving signs of web, strands of which caught the light for a while.

Well that's weird!  I did a tortured response to this, all about not being able to get an adequate snap and the type of critter it is etc etc, and it's disappeared with only the quoted text remaining.  Maybe the system censored my nonsense Hugging

    23 August

13:21 ~ PTZ found Klive with fish on Odin's perch.  I expect he was seen earlier on nest cam, will check later.

In the meantime, nothing illuminating to see here:

Klive's day - sorta Stuck out tongue closed eyes

    .

Just for the sake of it:

Gosh, Klive was in early this morning - compared to recent habit.  I've tagged a deer on the end.  I'm not sure if the evident softness of the ground as the deer left our screen is due to depth of ground-cover or bogginess of soil ???

    ..

From 09:30 there were lotsa Chaffies (and maybe others) on the nest but camperson came on duty a few minutes too late to catch them.

    G'night folks! xxx

I know I said g'night but I got waylaid, and as I was checking the nestcam view of the Chaffie invasion I noticed a Great Tit among them, and lo and behold Astonished

A startling frame, just in case anyone misses the momentous event - and I know it's not clear, but you shoulda seen how pale and blurry the originals were:

    ..

BUT - a few seconds later I noticed something appear and disappear on the right side that could have been an insect leg, we'll have to wait and see if there's another one there.

    EDIT -

Relented and did a little vid for YouTubers.

    25 August

Klive left it until 20:25 to visit today !!!  He had a slight wander on the nest but other than that he did nothing but stand there until flying off about 20 minutes later.

    He looked good.

  • Yes, Scylla, Klive is looking very fit and ready for migration.  I wonder whether that will be the last we see of him, surveying his domain and taking it all in.

    Bank Holiday Monday 26 August

Pia reported on chat:  KL5 still viewable on replay, 20:25 - 20:46 yesterday evening.

There is no sign of him so far today.

We had a beautiful golden morning

But we did have a sighting of a buzzard at 13.19.  The cam had been on the nest for a while, and then suddenly found the raptor

It flew off within a minute,

14.07  and the cam stayed on the that view

14.20  cam back on the nest
