LLYN BRENIG August 2022

Link to JULY 2022

Our Osprey family taken on 7th July, 2022.

Our chicks on 31st July, 2022. Olwen flying in to join her family.

This was a new nest erected for 2022 season to replace the one vandalised in 2021 after this pair and just laid their first egg.

Our male, blue LJ2  (2018 South Argyll) arrived on 6th April 2022.

Our female, blue LM6  (2018 Menteith, Stirling) arrived on 10th April 2022.

This is our young adult osprey pair’s first successful breeding season.

First egg  25th April. Second egg 28th April. Third egg 1st May.

Eggs hatched 1st June, 3rd June, 5th June (3rd chick died on day of hatching) Broken heart

Chicks ringed ringed 4th July, chick #1 blue X6 female,  chick #2 blue KA9 male.

Chicks named  7th July - X6 Olwen - KA9 Gelert as chosen by public vote on Brenig Facebook.

8th July, it was noticed LM6’s blue darvic ring had split and fallen off her leg onto the nest on 7th July.  She now only has a silver BTO ring on her right leg.

The first born chick, X6/Olwen fledged at 55 days old at 12.45 on 26th July.

The second born chick KA9/Gelert fledged at 55 days old at 07.29 on 28th July.

Today on 1st August, the chicks are 61 and 59 days old respectively.

  • Monday, 8th August

Good morning all, a wee bit misty early this morning. LJ2 first to appear appropriately 06.00 with a chick calling from the cam post.

  • One standing quietly on the nest the other making ear splitting demands off camera

Haha, yes that’s a very good description our our youngsters’ calls Patily! !

  • Thanks for all the updates here, Glider. Had a quick look and you are doing a fantastic job keeping us updated.

Lovely to see the chicks doings so well - and long may it continue :-)

Aw thanks Karen, nice of you to say. I’ve just learned everything from following what you and others do! BlushTwo hearts

Yes the chicks are still doing very well and as you say, hopefully will continue to do so into their adulthood. Heart

  • Similar to early this morning but one eating (Gelert?) and the other protesting from the edgeof the nest I am happy to see them whatever they are doing and I too hope they continue in like vein and that their dedecatedparents go go to prodce many step-siblings for them
  • First fish of the day (headless) brought in by LJ2 at around 14.05. The chicks flew onto the nest to meet him.

Gelert got to the fish first.

He took it and mantled over it.

He started eating, at one point Olwen moved in to take it but Gelert shouldered her off and kept it. Little brother’s getting more confident!

Yes, you’re right Patily, Gelert is eating and Olwen is hungry. Oh and I too truly hope so that this nest will become well established and produce many young in the future. For these 2 parent birds to come back after what happened last year and make a success of it this year bodes well for the future I think. Heart eyes

  • Today Olwen/X6 (F) is 68 days old - fledged 13 days ago.

    and Gelert/KA9 (M) is 66 days old - fledged 11 days ago.

  • Just delivered - 17.00 - a cracking whole fish from LM6 to Olwen.

In her excitement, Olwen dropped the fish but held LM6’s talons

poor LM6, she just held her position until Olwen let go.

Olwen takes her fish. She’s waited all day for a feed so this will do her perfectly.
