LLYN BRENIG August 2022

Link to JULY 2022

Our Osprey family taken on 7th July, 2022.

Our chicks on 31st July, 2022. Olwen flying in to join her family.

This was a new nest erected for 2022 season to replace the one vandalised in 2021 after this pair and just laid their first egg.

Our male, blue LJ2  (2018 South Argyll) arrived on 6th April 2022.

Our female, blue LM6  (2018 Menteith, Stirling) arrived on 10th April 2022.

This is our young adult osprey pair’s first successful breeding season.

First egg  25th April. Second egg 28th April. Third egg 1st May.

Eggs hatched 1st June, 3rd June, 5th June (3rd chick died on day of hatching) Broken heart

Chicks ringed ringed 4th July, chick #1 blue X6 female,  chick #2 blue KA9 male.

8th July, it was noticed LM6’s blue darvic ring had split and fallen off her leg onto the nest on 7th July.  She now only has a silver BTO ring on her right leg.

  • 09.07 The chicks have been relaxing and having a good preen on the nest, waiting on breakfast. (Olwen standing)

  • 09.48 LM6 makes a quick contact call and flies in with a freshly caught little fish.

Gelert is in prime position to receive the fish

It’s a bit of an awkward exchange, perhaps Gelert is grabbing LM6’s leg, I can’t see

but LM6 has to do some balancing acrobatics until Gelert finally takes the fish! Something momentarily catches their attention.

As Gelert holds the fish, Olwen dives in for a quick steal.

Gelert holds firm and gets his reward.

  • Just after 12.30 LM6 flies in with a good sized headless fish.

    Gelert quickly follows her

    Olwen quickly follows Gelert.

Gelert has control of the fish, mantling over it.

    He has a good feed

before Olwen goes over to take it.

    She has a good feed

then retires to the perch. Gelert has the fish again.

    He doesn’t manage the tail

and flies off leaving it. Olwen comes over to get it.

The fish is finished around 14.49, just over 2 hours since arrival!

  • 15.50 Gelert arrives on the nest followed by Olwen. A few seconds later LJ2 comes in from over the water with a small headless fish.

    Gelert takes the fish

    and proceeds to eat it.

Olwen (left) calls for more fish.

  • LM6 was on the nest, Olwen the perch. LM6 spotted a small leftover piece of fish just before 18.00.

It took Olwen a few seconds before she noticed her mum was eating! She then flew down to join her

and got herself a wee feed.

  • 19.15, still just Olwen around, LM6 flies in with a small whole fish.

Olwen takes the fish and LM6 leaves her to it.

    Hello Gelert! Wave

He landed on the perch then down to the nest.

Too late though and could only watch Olwen finishing off the fish.

  • What a star LM6 is, making sure both her youngsters are fed, she returns at 20.02 with another small live fish for Gelert this time.

    Gelert enjoyed his supper.

  • And she’s back - 21.24 LM6 flies in from the woods area with a headless fish, larger than her other recent ones. Images a bit blurry because of the darkness encroaching.

    She lands and waits,

    looks around, feeds,

    looked around again

still looking, heard distant calls and flew off with the fish. She deserves this one to herself.

  • That’s 5 fish LM6 has brought to the nest today compared to LJ2’s one tiny one! He needs to step up his game tomorrow!
  • My goodness, what fabulous coverage Glider. Thank you. The chicks are certainly being fed far better than LG's youngsters.
