LLYN BRENIG August 2022

  • In reply to Glider:

19.37 Well this is exciting. Olwen on the perch, Gelert on the nest, LJ2 flies in with a whole fish.

Gelert is just taking the fish from LJ2 as LM6 flies in with another whole fish!

Olwen quickly flies down and we have a crowded nest with 4 ospreys and 2 fish.

Olwen tries to take Gelert’s fish but he manages to hold on to it. Both juveniles go to different sides of the nest mantling but only Gelert has a fish. (Olwen nearest the camera)

Olwen seems to have forgotten that LM6 has a fish too. LM6 had to take her fish over to Olwen. LM6 started eating/preparing it

LM6 then fed Olwen a few pieces

before Olwen decided to take it for herself.

2 happy youngsters with a fish each to enjoy.

  • Saturday 6th August

Good morning all. Looks like another nice day, calm, dry and bright. From quick scroll back, can’t see any fish deliveries but parent birds were on the nest just before 07.00 defending. Don’t have time to investigate further at the moment.

    Be back later.

EDIT: had another look, LJ2 came to the nest first chipping, LM6 then joined him, both mantling/chipping for a minute or two. Didn’t see who was intruding.

  • In reply to Glider:

The two juveniles have both had a fish this morning.

LJ2 brought the first fish in at 11.09. Olwen was like a whippet getting to the fish first!

11.38 LM6 brought the second fish into Gelert. He was on the nest alone after Olwen leaving a minute before, having finished her fish.

This fish looks a bit bigger than the first one.

  • In reply to Glider:

LJ2 joined Gelert during his feed to sit on the perch

Gelert eventually gave up eating the fish. He moved a stick or two and cleaned his beak, leaving the nest around 12.52. He flew to perch in the nearby tree arrowed.

    LJ2 watched him go,

making sure Gelert was settled before going down for the fish

which he promptly took away, flying off to the right of camera.

  • In reply to Glider:

15.13 Gelert flies onto the nest followed by Olwen. LJ2 then arrives with a fish.

Olwen gets to LJ2 first and takes the fish. There’s something wrong with the sound. I can’t hear the chicks fish calling! (It was out of sync earlier on today.)

Olwen takes the fish to the edge of the nest to eat.

Gelert left and Olwen was left eating alone when she suddenly stopped and looked up. An Osprey appeared flying over the water. 2 ospreys (presumably our parent birds) flew from the woods to give chase.

Olwen, with her fish, quickly took off.

The 3 ospreys chasing in our view only lasted a few seconds but must’ve been longer off camera.

  • In reply to Glider:

16.00 Olwen was back on the nest eating her fish and my sound is back on too!

  • In reply to Glider:

The sound is broken on the nest. I can hear all of the background noise, the water lapping, the wind, Osprey calling near the nest etc. and I now realise there must be a second microphone on the nest and it isn’t working. Otherwise, the chicks have lost their voices with calling so much! lol I’m having to lipread what Olwen is wanting now!

  • In reply to Glider:

    "Fish, fish!" lol

Thanks for all of your updates, Glider

  • Sunday 7th August

Good morning everyone, another bright and clear morning. Both chicks have visited the nest, no sightings of the parent birds so far.

Here is Gelert (front) and Olwen around 05.40.
