Heather: Oh that's ghastly for poor Callum and a living nightmare for the parents of the boy who died. Yes, the memory will stay with him, but maybe it will make him more aware of just how easily these things can happen and to take nothing for granted when he's out on the road.
OG: Well, good you had a nice time, but sorry the oedema complicated the trip - in addition to helping when faced with a camera. :-(
Lynette: Please let us know what the doc recommends (assuming you were able to see her today).
Lindybird: I suspect you'll allow yourself to get excited about the rebooked cruise as you get closer. (If they cancel the next one, sue the b******s! ) Hope you got a nice cabin and I'd agitate for all kinds of upgrades in light of previous experience.
dibnlib: Sounds like a lovely morning out.
PatO: Hope you didn't forget anything during your foray to the supermarket. The weather does look bad this week. :-)
Diane: I didn't thank you for the lovely photo of the Goldeneyes that started us off (the pix seems to appear later in the day).
I've been sleeping later since we said goodbye to puss, but am still expecting to see her in her usual morning spot. Odd that OH seems to be more affected, given that he was never a "cat" person. Anyway, we've decided to bring her home and bury her in the garden where she used to like to loll about rather than the other option. That way, we can say hallo to her each day.

Our herring gulls are red listed birds. Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.
Lindybird said:After two visits including one almost hour long meeting with our travel agent, and several phone calls, we have now rebooked our cruise with the same company. Sis in law was incandescent that we could use them, but the same cruise leaves again on a later date and there is nothing else available which even resembles the same trip: I've looked at hundreds, and we even considered a holiday in a resort, but my OH offered to take us on a weekend away on my birthday in addition which means that we can then sail later. We're not excited or anything as it's been spoiled now, but are relieved to have finally resolved the whole thing.

Thanks, all,for your very kind words. As ANNETTE says, in the long run it can only help Callum. His dad ( divorced from his Mum) will hopefully phone him this evening. As a serving soldier with experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan he will know, more than any of us, what Callum is going through and is well placed to support him.
I made a quick visit to Felixstowe Ferry yesterday - I couldn't help but notice this gull and a rather clingy youngster:

Clare - love the pictures, and particularly your comments. Thank you so much for posting them.

Annette-a very good decision regarding Lightnings resting place.
Thank you, Clare. Double treat today!
Clare: That poor seagull is discovering what so many modern parents realizes - the kids stick around longer than we expected...
Lindybird: Apropos of Clare's comment, I wonder if they mysterious rich person was a figment of RC's imagination and a ploy to pack the next sailing. But probably not.... I'm just being cynical..
