There seems to be a massive increase in the number of ants in our garden this year. Mainly very tiny fast moving black ones but others too.
We have quite a few largish ant hills that have appeared out into in the lawn as well as those around/under paving. The biggest one is on the rock garden which has come up nearly level with a dwarf wall that runs across the front of the house - probably about 200-250mm high above the normal soil level.
I've not really noticed this type of thing before and I wondered if it was something to do with the very wet few months we have just had? Do ants build up the nests more in wet seasons to avoid being flooded out perhaps?
Anyone noticed this elsewhere?
I live in Rossington and I've noticed a huge increase. Never had them before but now both front and back lawn have at least 6 ant hills each. Googled it and it appears there is no way to get rid of them. Noticed quite a few neighbours have same problem on front lawn at least

You need a few Green Woodpeckers, they would have a field day
Of all creatures, man is the most detestable, he is the only creature that inflicts pain for sport, knowing it to be pain. ~ Mark Twain
Green woodpeckers would be most welcome! :-)
This might sound crazy but last year, we had a few ants coming in the house somehow from the patio outside... I don't mind ants but would rather they stayed outside! We did not want to use any of the nasty pesticides available but spotted somewhere on the net that ants don't like cucumber!!! We put a few slices along the bottom of the patio door and, hey presto, no more ants. :-)
The ant hill
I'm in Sheffield and I'd not noticed an increase in the Ant population, (they usually dig out the sand in the block paving), until today. I now have a colony hibernating in a wall near the house. I've had none inside though.
