Lots of Pheasants

There seemed to be a lot of pheasants around at Old Moor yesterday, mainly females, or possibly juveniles.

Here's a couple from the bird garden, although most were near the Tree Sparrow farm.

Of course they were heavily outnumbered by the Golden Plovers who seemed to be getting a little restless together with a number of Lapwings.

Despite the weather, it was another lovely day birdwatching.

  • There are a lot of Pheasants generally at this time of year - often ones bred for the shoot. On the road from Brampton to Wentworth to Thorpe Hesley, they are all over the place and sadly, some have been the victim of traffic.

There were some feeding over in the fields beyond the R Dearne (towards Cathill) this evening when we walked through.

As we came back along the TPT about 4:30, the plovers and lapwings were giving a great display like in your photo - an amazing sight.

  • We saw a lot of female Pheasants today they where truly beautiful to watch even though they are not as brightly coloured as their male counterparts!

    Thank you Sila :)

  • I was back down there again today, Sila, and saw mainly female pheasants, with just one or 2 males, but you're right about them.  I was watching them through my bins just to get a closer look at their plumage.

We get them in the garden back home lovely to watch them strutting about.

I have to say mind you I often think they are quite possibly the dumbest bird on the planet - they tend to become totally suicidal when they spot a moving car.

  • HAHA !!! Agreed !!! This happens to us many times on the run to the coast to visit my parents. They will be still as statues at the side of the road and as soon as a car gets close its like they have to play chicken with it !!! :)

    Thank you Sila :)
