I thought I was seeing things the other day on my way to work. I thought I saw sand martins on the river Don, at Meadowhall. I tried a few times to get a definate look at them and today I did. They are nesting in a pipe in the wall. They are hunting for flies low and fast over the river. How exciting!!! I`ve seen King Fishers and Herons around Meadowhall before but this is a first.Nature surprised me again.
Bird song livens up the most boring day.
Hi JLH
Nature's great isn't it. The River Don has been getting better and better over recent years and the bit by Meadowhall is now pretty good. First time I've heard of Sand Martin nesting along this stretch though so it is good news. For several years during the 1990's there was a Shag that lived by the interchange bridge. It got blown inland by storm when it was a juvenile and never left. I used to stop and see it every time we went to Meadowhall!
