Having done some research I know think my original assumption that the wasp was after the dragonfly as prey is wrong. Apparently dragonflies catch and eat smaller insects by making a basket with their legs and catching their prey in flight. As the wasp won the battle I now suspect the dragonfly caught more than it bargained for, rather than the wasp catching the dragonfly.
